The world of celebrity cameos is vast and filled with all sorts of self-debasing lunacy and wacky hijinks — but how about the celebrities who have played themselves in movies and TV? That’s what we’re exploring today, with 25 instances of a real person portraying themselves or at least a fictionalized version of themselves on screen. Sometimes it’s an aging action star bringing himself into the spotlight with a dramatic take on himself, other times it’s Al Pacino shilling for Dunkin Donuts. Life’s weird like that.

Of course, some of these cameos even wind up being even bigger pop culture moments than the whole of their careers — just think about Neil Patrick Harris making us all go “Doogie Hauser who?” in his career defining role in the Harold and Kumar films, or Bob Barker decking Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore. Even better, how about the Beatles as themselves in A Hard Day’s Night, which basically transformed them from musical icons to permanent cultural icons? Then there’s the wealth of non-NPH celebrities playing darker versions of themselves in movies like This is the End, featuring the likes of Seth Rogen, Rihanna, and Michael Cera; and Josie and the Pussycats, which famously turned Carson Daly into a deranged assassin. All this and more!
