A Big Struggle After Years Apart

The long awaited Fear the Walking Dead reunion does not go well. “Honey” has Dwight (Austin Amelio) rekindling his love for Sherry (Christine Evangelista), but they have vastly different plans for the future. Sherry has new allies with a singular objective. Al (Maggie Grace) is drawn unwillingly into the plan. But an appearance by Morgan (Lennie James) changes everyone’s objectives.

“Honey” begins at night with Dwight and Sherry in bed making up for lost time. Sherry reads the letters she had left for Dwight with the infinity symbol. He brings her scrambled eggs with hot sauce. They share a Cipro pill to clear out the plague’s remnants. They kiss by candlelight. Hill contacts Dwight on the radio. Al has missed her check-in. She was supposed to cover for Dwight. He responds to Hill that they’re scouting a new location.

Dwight wants to run away. They have each other again. Sherry says they can’t. Ginny would hunt them down. She says “I’m sorry”, then gets up to find a fork. Dwight hears a noise. He calls for Sherry, but she doesn’t respond. He grabs his axe and walks to the back of the house. A man in a mask is by the door window. Dwight is surrounded by armed masked intruders.

A sack is taken off Dwight’s head. It’s daylight, he’s in a huge empty pool that’s been rigged as a shelter. He screams for Sherry, then knocks over the masked man. Dwight grabs his gun, “Tell me where my wife is!” He tears off his mask, but is surrounded again at the top of the pool. “It’s okay D,” Sherry takes off her mask and walks down to meet him.

Sherry apologizes for how he was brought in. She orders everyone to lower their guns. The people are outcasts from Ginny’s towns. The ones she deemed not worthy. Sherry has joined them “to take Ginny down.” Oswald (Andres Munar) points his gun at Dwight. He wants to know where Ginny will be next. He doesn’t believe Dwight. He plays a video of Al on the GoPro. They have her hostage. He’ll kill her if Dwight doesn’t start talking.

Oswald starts counting down, but is stopped by another masked man. It’s Rollie (Cory Hart), Dwight saved his life twice at the Tank Town refinery. Rollie shows them their armory. They have a “Hail Mary” plan. They have been tracking the MRAP. Oswald wants to destroy it. Al is brought in. They can’t blow up the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle with an IED. “If you really want to take down Virginia, you don’t destroy something like that. You steal it.” Al counsels.

The entire group is on horseback waiting for the MRAP. They all wear masks. It lumbers towards them. In the vehicle, Hill radios Reg (Dennis Fitzgerald). He orders him to bring the MRAP to Lawton. Dwight rides up and knocks down the antenna. Reg unleashes the machine guns, but Al tells everyone to ride below the firing line. Reg swerves towards the horses. Dwight scrambles on top and gets inside. He briefly struggles with Reg and his mask is knocked off. Dwight kicks him out of the driver’s side door.

Dwight stops the MRAP. They race back to the road to find Reg. Al and Dwight are stunned when Morgan arrives on horseback. Dragging Reg with a rope. They lead Morgan back to the pool. Morgan explains that someone saved him, but he still doesn’t know who. Al is shocked he’d been riding around like the lone ranger. Dwight brings Morgan up to speed on Sherry’s people. They don’t know where Grace or their friends were taken.

That night, everyone sits in the empty pool around a fire. Oswald feeds a caged dog. Rollie toasts a drink to new friends. Morgan tells them that he’s found somewhere where they can hide from Ginny. Rollie disagrees, they have the MRAP. Sherry questions Morgan’s respect for all life. Ginny must be killed. Morgan responds that he’s changed, but he’s already been “in a war that took too many lives.” They have friends in Ginny’s communities. “Don’t make a move against Ginny until the time is right,” Morgan cautions.

Sherry and Dwight talk alone. She doesn’t believe in Morgan’s plan. Her loyalty is to her people. Dwight considers Al and Morgan “family”, but won’t leave without her. He commits to attacking Ginny now. The next morning, a masked Dwight has Reg tied to a chair. He still refuses to talk. Dwight covers Reg in blood. Oswald brings in the dog. It barks viciously.

Dwight takes off his mask, “I will kill you.” Reg laughs, he recognizes Dwight from the videotapes. Morgan stops the interrogation. Outside, Morgan begs Dwight not to put their friends in danger. Dwight is tired of hearing Morgan’s plans. He knows Morgan would do the exact “same thing” for Grace.

Sherry and Rollie load bullets into the MRAP’s guns. She thinks they can lure Ginny into a trap. Dwight calls Hill on the radio to check in. He claims to have found a settlement with a hundred people. He wants Virginia to make the first overture. Dwight gives Hill the time and location to meet by the pool.

Sherry is concerned that Dwight is turning his back on Al and Morgan. It reminds her of him at the Sanctuary. Dwight swears to her that he will kill Ginny. Meanwhile, Al and Morgan steal their dynamite. They plan to take the MRAP and blow the drive shaft before it can be used; as a worst case scenario. Dwight surprises them. He knew they would try something.

Dwight takes Al and Morgan to where Reg is held. But before they can be locked in, Sherry orders Dwight to also be imprisoned. She doesn’t want him being a part of this. Dwight is shocked as she walks away. That night, Sherry places the MRAP in the ambush location. Ginny should be there in ten minutes.

Tied up with Al and Morgan, Dwight apologizes for their predicament. He realizes he’s made a mistake. Dwight starts scraping his hand ties on the ground. Several vehicles drive up to the pool building. Rollie and Oswald watch on the roof. Sherry waits in the MRAP, her hands on the trigger. Suddenly, Dwight escapes and runs to the MRAP.

The cars stop. Hill and the other rangers get out, but Ginny is not there. He calls out for Dwight and Al. In the MRAP, Dwight begs Sherry not to shoot. She would be dooming his friends. Sherry is torn, she just can’t let “him” continue. Rollie radios for her to shoot. Hill and the rangers get back in their cars. They drive away as Sherry weeps.

Sherry yells at Dwight then runs to her room. He tries to comfort her. She feels guilty for her inaction with Negan. “I could have done something,” she cries bitterly. Dwight pleads they cannot let the past define them. Sherry begs for Dwight to leave. She needs to finish this. Sherry wants Dwight to remain the man he used to be. She screams for him to leave.

A saddened Dwight walks to where the dog is kept. He releases it back to the wild. Sherry and her people leave with the MRAP. Morgan asks Dwight to come with him. He promises to take down Ginny. Al comforts Dwight by saying Sherry will find her way back. Al and Dwight put their clothes on two tied up walkers. Morgan beats their faces in and then kills them. They leave the bodies in the road for the rangers to find.

The back of a box truck is opened by Dwight. Inside are Nora (Devyn Tyler) and the survivors from the building. Al has found them a place to be safe. Morgan is leading them to the dam. He warns there’s a lot of work to do. Dwight lingers back. On the truck lift gate, he draws an arrow and the infinity symbol for Sherry to find. He joins the group and they follow Morgan.

Sherry and Dwight only lasted one episode together. That’s a bummer, but makes sense. Her guilt after Negan has her firmly committed to killing Ginny. I thought she was the person who saved Morgan, but that remains a mystery. It was ridiculous for Morgan to find them so quickly. But at least three members of the primary cast are together again. We’ll have to wait for another Dwight and Sherry reunion. Fear the Walking Dead returns next Sunday on AMC.
