Hulu has recently revealed the first look for its upcoming limited series The Dropout, which stars the Mamma Mia actress Amanda Seyfried as Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. The Hulu series focuses on the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire (according to Forbes), and how she lost it all after it turned out her industry was based on fraudulent promises. The Dropout will be a six-episode miniseries, with three episodes releasing at first, with three more to follow subsequently.
A glance at the first look images makes it clear that Seyfried was a brilliant casting choice, and paired with the interesting true-crime narrative, The Dropout will be something worth looking forward to.

In addition to the Mean Girls actress, the show stars a rather noted cast. Naveen Andrews, known best for his performance in Sense8 as Jonas Maliki and in the Ubisoft video game Far Cry 4 as Sabal, will be playing the role of Holmes’ former business partner and boyfriend, Sunny Balwani. The cast further features William H. Macy, Laurie Metcalf, Elizabeth Marvel, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Stephen Fry, Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Sam Waterston, LisaGay Hamilton, Michaela Watkins, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach in various supporting roles.
Hulu describes this upcoming miniseries as “an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong.” The Dropout is largely adapted from the ABC Radio podcast with the same name. Elizabeth Holmes’ story was first properly explored in the 2018 nonfiction book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, published a year after her empire started to fall. The book went on to serve as the source material for the 2019 HBO documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley.
Holmes and her company Theranos set out to create a home device that people could use to test their blood for all types of illnesses, an idea that occurred to her as a sophomore at Stanford. Following this vision, Theranos had collected more than $92 million in venture capital by 2010.
However, it was soon revealed that she was allegedly falsifying data and using commercial devices to do so while collecting millions from investors. After authorities got involved, she was charged with nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Holmes’ trial over fraud charges is currently nearing its end, and she is facing up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 plus restitution for each count.
Liz Heldens, Liz Hannah, Katherine Pope, Rebecca Jarvis, Victoria Thompson, and Taylor Dunn will be presiding as the Executive Producer for The Dropout, alongside Michael Showalter and showrunner Elizabeth Meriwether.
