Amazon’s The Boys Mocks Gal Gadot’s Imagine Video in Latest Episode

The latest episode of Amazon’s The Boys season 3, “Herogasm,” delivers all the graphic sex and violence the showrunners had been teasing for months, but there is also a lighter moment that has reignited an old controversy. In March 2020, amidst a raging worldwide pandemic and lockdowns, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot went viral for all the wrong reasons.

Gadot assembled a few of her celebrity friends to sing John Lennon’s “Imagine” after witnessing something similar in Italy, where a trumpeter performed a cover of the song on his balcony. While Gadot still asserts that her intentions were “pure,” her ill-timed and downright cringe-worthy video wasn’t well-received by the internet at the time. Gadot and the other participants in the video, including Pedro Pascal, Kristen Wiig, Mark Ruffalo, Will Ferrell, and Natalie Portman, were slammed for being “tone-deaf” and “out of touch” with the real world.

The Boys recreated a similar moment at the start of episode 6 where The Deep (Chace Crawford), in light of recent supervillain attacks, initiates a sing-along to calm things down and “imagine a better world.” Members of The Seven and several well-known celebrities joined in as well, with Black Noir, who doesn’t talk, hilariously holding cue cards in place of lyrics. Spoiler Alert! Patton Oswalt, Josh Gad, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, Elizabeth Banks, Kumail Nanjiani, and Rose Byrne cameo in the episode. Some even nail the uninterested demeanor a few participants in the original video had.

The “Imagine” fiasco was previously ridiculed by the king of pop parody, “Weird Al” Yankovic, who recruited several comedians and actors like Bryan Cranston, Bob Odenkirk, Jack Black, and David Cross to perform his classic song “Eat it.” Amazon’s The Boys continues its trend of poking fun at real-world celebrity missteps, scandals, and pop culture controversies. The show recently mocked the Morbius re-release and its subsequent bombing, as well as the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign.

The Boys season 3 is currently airing on Prime Video, with episodes debuting weekly.

Gal Gadot Doesn’t Regret Making the Imagine Video But Understands the Criticism

Although Gal Gadot and her friends were heavily trolled for their antics, they didn’t suffer too much, as thankfully, the internet has a very short memory. Gadot recently admitted to InStyle that the “Imagine” video was in “poor taste,” but maintains that she had nothing but good intentions and just wanted to uplift her fans.

“It just felt right, and I don’t take myself too seriously. And with the whole ‘Imagine’ controversy, it’s funny. I was calling Kristen [Wiig] and I was like, ‘Listen, I want to do this thing.’ The pandemic was in Europe and Israel before it came here [to the U.S.] in the same way. I was seeing where everything was headed. But [the video] was premature. It wasn’t the right timing, and it wasn’t the right thing. It was in poor taste. All pure intentions, but sometimes you don’t hit the bullseye, right?”

Despite a career low like the “Imagine” video and her comments on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Gadot continues her upward spiral in Hollywood and is set to reprise the titular role in Wonder Woman 3. She last appeared alongside Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the Netflix blockbuster Red Notice and will next be seen as the Evil Queen in Disney’s Snow White remake.
