  • Assassin’s Creed Netflix Series Drops Writer Jeb Stuart

The renowned screenwriter and showrunner revealed he’s no longer involved in the project due to decisions made by the executives.

We’ve seen a deluge of video game adaptations on the TV screen after the success of Castlevania and Arcane, and Netflix is taking on another beloved video game franchise: Assassin’s Creed. Very few details have been revealed so far, but we did know who the showrunner was – until now. Jeb Stuart was signed on as the creative lead for the show, but an interview with Collider revealed that he’s since departed the project. Stuart had a cordial response, although he does point out that the new writers got to take over his material:

“I think it was a little bit of a move of executives from LA to London, and it allowed the London group who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was instead of getting to develop their own vision. So I think that’s fair. I know it’s going to be great whenever it comes out. I think the Ubisoft guys are fantastic. I think it’s a terrific franchise. It was just a good, mutual time to move on for both sides.”

What exactly Stuart’s “vision” was is still kept secret, but it appears that the London group will be working on his script instead of writing a new one from the ground up. Jeb Stuart is known for writing the screenplay for Die Hard, which became an immediate hit and one of the most memorable action movie classics. He also wrote The Fugitive and serves as the showrunner for Vikings: Valhalla. The new showrunner for the Assassin’s Creed series has not been announced, although it’s likely that they’ll be London-based.

Where and When Will the Assassin’s Creed Show Take Us?

Ubisoft

The Assassin’s Creed games technically take place in the near future, where descendants of powerful assassins look into their ancestor’s genetic memories using powerful technology called the Animus. They get sent back to various times and places, from Ancient Egypt, the American Revolution, or industrial-era London. The first game was released in 2007, and the series now sports a dozen main titles.

The time period and location of the series have not yet been revealed, nor do we know if it will cover a setting previously seen in one of the games or take us to an entirely new time and place. It’s still in very early development, and neither the cast nor a release date has been announced.

Assassin’s Creed was previously adapted into a film in 2016, starring Michael Fassbender. It disappointed both fans and critics alike, although it did earn back almost twice its budget at the box office. A sequel to that film was planned but got canceled after the movie’s poor reception.

The next entry to the video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, is set in the 800’s in Baghdad and is scheduled for release sometime in 2023.
