Batman Is Relaunching With a New Issue #1 – And a Totally New Costume

There’s a new Batman

coming to Gotham City, and he’s looking dope in his new costume. DC is having a big year not only for the big beginning of their new cinematic universe, but also for the medium that started it all: comics. James Gunn’s Superman is gearing up for its summer release and the highly-anticipated Clayface movie written by Mike Flanagan has just secured an impressive director. While the next installment in Robert Pattison’s The Batman won’t be arriving for a while yet, Batman is still getting the love he deserves in a brand-new comic iteration.

The current run of Batman comics, written by popular comic author Chip Zdarsky, recently came to a close with Batman #157, but there’s still more story to tell with the caped crusader. After the release of the exciting Hush 2 storyline by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee in March, DC will be relaunching Batman with a brand new #1 issue, complete with a fresh writer and an awesome, revamped costume. At the ComicsPro retailer event, DC revealed the new volume of Batman comics will be written by Matt Fraction, former Marvel writer of Uncanny X-Men and The Invincible Iron Man.

And no, he’s not planning on telling us.

However, the current Batman artist, Jorge Jimenez, is remaining on board and, together with Fraction, has designed a sick new costume and new Batmobile to set their upcoming series apart from the others. While Batman is looking tight in his new costume, it seems that Jimenez is taking him back to his glory days, trading the modern black and gray suit for the Bat’s classic blue and gray costume with his iconic yellow utility belt.

Batman’s Looking Both Fresh and Classic in His New Suit

Looking more similar to the beloved design from the fan-favorite show Batman: The Animated Series, the new take on the vigilante is true to modern comics while still capturing the whimsy that makes Batman so endearing. Fraction commented on how his personal relationship to Batman helped create the new homage to the past.

“I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Batman. It was the first comic I ever read. Jorge and I have a very superhero-forward kind of take on Batman. We’ve got a new Batmobile, we’ve got a new costume, we’ve got new characters, and we’ve got a lot of old ones too—good and bad; all the stuff that makes Batman the coolest character in comics. We want to celebrate it all.”

It’s official, Batman is back on top with only Gunn’s Superman competing for comic lovers’ affection. While we might not see a blue, gray, and yellow Batman on the big screen, comic fans will be able to enjoy the classic look in Batman #1 which will be released in September 2025. The caped crusader isn’t the only DC hero getting a fresh start right now. With a new Supergirl comic line beginning on May 14, DC’s comic future is looking bright, almost as bright as their cinematic future thanks to Gunn.
