Better Call Saul Star Bob Odenkirk Hopes Jimmy Gets a Happy Ending, But Won’t Bet on It

Bob Odenkirk is hoping the former attorney once known as Saul Goodman will have a happy ending on Better Call Saul, but he certainly isn’t betting on it. This month, cameras will start rolling as the cast and crew films the sixth and final season of the Breaking Bad spinoff. Consisting of 13 episodes, the final season will likely premiere on AMC in early 2022.

Primarily, Better Call Saul takes place before the events of Breaking Bad, revealing how aspiring attorney Jimmy McGill becomes the iconic character Saul Goodman. At the start of each season, flash-forward segments have provided a look into Saul’s future, where he has since been living under a new identity with the name Gene Takavic. When we last saw Gene, he had been confronted by a man who recognized who he really was, but rather than go into hiding again, “Gene” decides to handle the problem himself.

It seems like nearly every character in the Breaking Bad franchise has met a gruesome fate, and Bob Odenkirk himself shares the fears that many fans have that things are not going to end well for Jimmy (a.k.a. Saul, a.k.a. Gene). Though he doesn’t yet know exactly how the show will end, Odenkirk recently explained on PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing how he’s pleaded his case with series creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould to give the poor guy a happy ending after everything the character has endured.

“He’s a sad guy. I feel bad for him. You know, I tell Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould that I wish that there was some way they could think of a way for him to grow up and become at peace with some parts of himself. And with the world. I would love to play that.”

While it remains to be seen what happens with Jimmy, Odenkirk confirms that – for better or for worse – the character’s story arc will have proper closure in the final season. The Golden Globe nominee also stresses how much he hopes to see things somehow turn out well for Jimmy, but he’s advising Better Call Saul fans not to bet any money on it.

“Yeah, yes, you will [get closure to Gene’s story]. Gene is the future version of Jimmy McGill, Saul Goodman. After Breaking Bad, he goes into hiding as Gene Takavic. They will be pursuing that story to its end, so we’ll see what happens. I don’t know what. I don’t think… I want him to have a happy ending, but, don’t put your money on that.”

Along with Odenkirk, Better Call Saul has brought back many other fan favorites from Breaking Bad, such as Jonathan Banks as Mike Ehrmantraut and Giancarlo Esposito as Gus Fring. Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul have not yet appeared on the series, but it seems likely they’ll cameo at some point in the final season. Also featured on the show are Rhea Seehorn as Kim Wexler, Michael Mando as Nacho Varga, and Tony Dalton as Lalo Salamanca, three characters whose fates are also unknown as none of them appeared on Breaking Bad.

A release date hasn’t yet been set at AMC for the final season of Better Call Saul, but the series will reportedly premiere in the first part of 2022. To see more of Odenkirk, he stars in the new action-thriller Nobody which will be released on March 26. This news comes to us from Couch Surfing.
