Marvel Studios has wrapped filming on Daredevil: Born Again, but not without an unexpected cast member being revealed. After a long and chaotic production, the return of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdoch has undergone a massive creative overhaul, and that has seen another star from the Netflix Daredevil series returning – despite the fact they were previously recast in the MCU show.
Daredevil: Born Again began filming over a year ago, with fans believing that this new series would be a spiritual sequel to the former Netflix show rather than a direct continuation. However, the production has been anything but smooth, and this has led to all that changing. Filming on the series became a tumultuous affair thanks to 2023’s strikes, and the dissatisfaction Marvel Studios – and fans – felt over the direction of the series. Now, after so much upheaval, Daredevil: Born Again is shaping up to be as close to Season 4 of Netflix’s show as it could be.
Adding to this feel is the return of several stars from the original series, which, along with Cox, includes Vincent D’Onofrio once again stepping into the suit of Kingpin, Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson returning as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson respectively, and Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle aka The Punisher. Now, in one of the most surprising casting reveals, Ayelet Zurer will be back in the role of Kingpin’s wife, Vanessa Fisk, after initially being recast when the production began filming.
Daredevil: Born Again Is Now Closer to Daredevil Season 4 Than Ever
Daredevil: Born Again is a series that has been raked over the coals even before filming began. With many fans loudly calling for the return of several key characters from the old Charlie Cox-led series, it appeared for a long time that this new iteration of the franchise would be pretty much ignoring the previous storylines, and potentially even repeating them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
However, the replacement of the series head writers and director, with Marvel Studios bringing in Dario Scardapane as showrunner and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as lead directors, saw the series shift to bridge a gap between the Netflix Defenders Saga and the MCU. In a recent interview, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum confirmed that the old Netflix shows are now officially canon to the MCU. He explained:
“Flash forward now to Disney+, where we are actually laying out the timeline with tiles on a screen, all of a sudden we’re like, “We should just do it. Let’s do it.” It was also spurred by the redevelopment of Daredevil: Born Again , once we started to really lean into some of the mythology and backstory that was established in those Netflix shows. I was asked about this during the press for Echo , and I realized, “Oh, it’s not just assumed. People have an active interest and they want confirmation.” So we were able to do it fairly quickly, and it’s interesting that the service of Disney+ actually became the statement just by rearranging those tiles. That’s our medium to define the canon now, which is wild to think about.”
