Brooklyn Nine-Nine Cast & Crew Reveal Ideas for the Bruce Willis Cameo That Never Was

Sadly, popular cop sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine ended without a desired cameo from Die Hard star Bruce Willis, but, thanks to a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, we now know what an appearance from the action movie icon might have looked like. The cast of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, including Andy Samberg, Stephanie Beatriz, Andre Braugher, Melissa Fumero, Joe Lo Truglio, Dirk Blocker, Joel McKinnon Miller and co-creator Dan Goor spoke of the possible cameo ideas during a celebration of the series finale, with Goor revealing…

“There are always pitches from a writers room that are like, the whole Nine-Nine is called out on a big case, and then he walks in and he’s like, ‘Hey, is there anyone here? No, I guess not,’ and walks out.”

Bruce Willis walking into an empty precinct, and thus Die Hard super fan Jake Peralta missing a meeting with his idol, would have been the perfect cameo for the actor in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and it’s a damn shame that this couldn’t be worked out somehow. Samberg went on to offer his own take on what a Bruce Willis cameo could have looked like, with his idea offering Perlata and much more memorable, and much more wholesome moment.

“I always just assumed it would be like, Jake sees him on the street and loses his mind. And he’s like, ‘Hey, you’re doing good, kid.'”

Detective Jake Peralta, who is of course played by Andy Samberg in the series, has often cited the 1988 action movie classic, Die Hard, and its central hero John McClane as his inspiration for becoming a cop, with fans crying out for a cameo for some time. Unfortunately, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine having now come to an end, it looks like we shall never see Bruce Willis and Jake Peralta come face-to-face. But at least these descriptions allow us to imagine what such a crowd-pleasing moment could have looked like, with opinion sure to be split on which idea is best.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine follows the exploits of the hilarious Det. Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) and his diverse, lovable colleagues as they police the NYPD’s 99th Precinct. After Capt. Raymond Holt’s (Andre Braugher) demotion to patrolman at the end of Season 6, the squad’s world is turned upside down. Rounding out the ensemble is the newly promoted Lt. Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews). Reporting to him is Sgt. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), a consummate rule-follower with a weak spot for dork dancing, and her husband, Jake. The other detectives in the squad include Jake’s best friend, Det. Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), and the tough-as-nails Det. Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz). Also part of the Nine-Nine are veteran officers Det. Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) and Det. Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker), whose only skill as police officers is their ability to make a passable pot of coffee.

The series was put in a difficult position following the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests, with Samberg’s co-star Terry Crews revealing at the time that the writers behind Brooklyn Nine-Nine decided to scrap four episodes that had already been written in the wake of real-life events. “[Producer Dan Goor] had four [new] episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. We have to start over,” Crews revealed.

The eighth season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is the show’s last, with season 8 will premiering its last episode on NBC on September 16, 2021. This comes to us courtesy of Late Night with Seth Meyers.
