Bruce Campbell Is a Goofy Dad in Jimmy Kimmel’s Adopted Sitcom Pilot for ABC

B-movie legend Bruce Campbell is next set to enter the sitcom world with a lead role in Adopted, the single-camera comedy series pilot co-written by Jimmy Kimmel. Co-created by Shawn Vance (The Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse), who is set to star as himself, the cast also includes Wendie Malick (Hot in Cleveland), Maxim Swinton (Halston), Tate Moore (Beautiful Dreamer), Sofia Pernas (Blood & Treasure), and Reyn Doi (Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar).

Written and executive produced by Jimmy Kimmel and The Green Beret’s Guide to Surviving the Apocalypse creators and stars Vance and Daril Fannin, Adopted is based on Vance’s real life. The pilot picks up with a Green Beret (Vance) returning home to Texas from military service, when he and his family struggle with the challenges of adopting his new brother, a 12-year-old Russian boy (Swinton).

Vance plays Shawn Voss, a Green Beret fresh out of the US Army Special Forces who now struggles to adapt to civilian life. Campbell co-stars as Shawn’s father, John Hoss, a character described as a “goofy, optimistic, carefree, and conservative Dad” and a “red-blooded, all-American, business owner who hates negative thoughts… so he doesn’t have ’em! He’s out-of-touch as he is unaware, but makes up for it with his jolly nature. His greatest fear is interpersonal conflict, and now that the house is full of kids, conflict is inevitable.”

Other characters include Shawn’s mom Michelle (Malick), an “empathetic, overly-attentive, good Christian mother who believes in her kids as much as she worries about them”; Daniel Voss (Swinton), a recent adoptee from Russia who’s “socially unaware, naive for his age, and speaks heavily accented English”; Chelsea Voss (Moore), a social media influencer who’s the hippest and smartest person in the house; Dr. Zora (Pernas), an adoption specialist and the apple of Shawn’s eye; and Thumper (Doi), a happy-go-lucky adoptee and Daniel’s best friend.

Known for appearing in the Evil Dead movie trilogy and many other beloved cult classics, Bruce Campbell reprised his famous role as Ash Williams in the TV series spinoff Ash vs Evil Dead. The show ran for three seasons between 2015 and 2018, and after its cancellation, Campbell announced he would no longer play the role in a live-action capacity. He will continue to voice Ash as a playable character in the upcoming Evil Dead video game adaptation.

Since Ash vs Evil Dead, Campbell hosted the Travel Channel’s reboot of Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and had a role in the AMC series Lodge 49. In so many words, Campbell has also recently confirmed that he filmed a cameo for the upcoming Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which reunites him with Evil Dead director Sam Raimi.

Tweeting from London, where Doctor Strange 2 has been filming, Campbell wrote: “Boy, it was a blast, working in a certain city, with a certain director on a certain movie with a certain actor – it sure was!”

It remains to be seen if ABC will order Adopted to series after seeing the pilot. This news comes to us from Deadline.
