Amazon has officially ordered two seasons of the much-hyped animated DC outing, Batman: Caped Crusader. After stepping in to save the show following the merciless axe-dropping of fellow streaming service HBO Max aka Max, the studio are clearly confident in what they’ve seen from Batman: Caped Crusader, which has been described as “a spiritual prequel” the crucially acclaimed and much-beloved Batman: The Animated Series.
“Batman: The Animated Series helped pioneer in the evolution of superhero storytelling and defined the Dark Knight for a generation,” Vernon Sanders, head of television, Amazon and MGM Studios, said of the project. “Batman: Caped Crusader will no doubt continue that tradition and, alongside Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Warner Bros. Animation to offer a variety of takes of the Batman mythos to our global Prime Video customers.”
Written by celebrated comic book scribes Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker, Batman: Caped Crusader counts the likes of The Batman director Matt Reeves, filmmaker J.J. Abrams, and Batman: The Animated Series co-creator Bruce Timm among its producers.
“Batman: Caped Crusader is an all-new animated series and reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens of executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves,” the official description of Batman: Caped Crusader reads. “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent the character and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences, all set in a visually striking world. In addition to Timm, Abrams, and Reeves, Ed Brubaker and Sam Register are set to executive produce the series. Based on characters from DC, Batman: Caped Crusader is produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions, and 6th & Idaho.”

Batman: Caped Crusader is just one of several Batman-centered projects on the horizon at Amazon. Alongside the darker, more mature prequel series, Amazon is also developing a couple of comedic ones: Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family.
“We are excited to partner with Amazon to begin an all-new animated chapter of Batman,” Sam Register, president, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, said. From the cinematic noir storytelling of Batman: Caped Crusader to the comedic adventures of Merry Little Batman and Bat-Family, these new projects ensure that there will be an animated Batman story ready to excite fans of all ages.”
An animated family action comedy, Merry Little Batman follows little Damian Wayne as he confronts enemies in his city after finding himself alone at Wayne Manor. Transforming into Little Batman, Damian must fight to defend his home from the supervillains vying to destroy his holidays. Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Merry Little Batman is directed by Mike Roth (Regular Show) from a screenplay by Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!).
Bat-Family meanwhile will pick up following the events of Merry Little Batman and follows Bruce Wayne, Damian, and Alfred as they attempt to balance their superhero stylings with also being a super family.
