Castlevania Spinoff Series Announced Which Will Follow Richter Belmont

One month after Castlevania ended its run on Netflix, the streamer officially announced an upcoming spinoff series. Created by Warren Ellis, Castlevania was a smash hit for the streamer when it premiered its four-episode first season in 2017. Netflix promptly ordered a second season with double the episodes, It was announced in April that season 4, which premiered in May, would serve as the final season of the show, but that spinoffs were possible.

On Friday, Netflix made it official that a Castlevania spinoff is coming as a part of Netflix Geeked’s Geeked Week event. The new series is executive produced by Kevin Kolde’s Project 51 Productions and showrunner Clive Bradley. It will not include the involvement of original Castlevania series creator Ellis, who Netflix severed all ties with in the midst of sexual misconduct allegations against the writer.

The new series will focus on Richter Belmont, Trevor’s Belmont’s son, and Maria Renard. It also set the story during the French Revolution in 1792. Netflix didn’t divulge any additional information, such as an official title, nor were any screenshots or footage revealed. Still, this is great news for fans of the original show that were disappointed to see it ending after four seasons, even if many will miss Trevor Belmont.

“We’re not talking about what I would specifically call a spinoff, because we’re taking from the characters or spinning directly from this series,” Kolde said of the project in an interview, per CBR. At the time, the news of the reboot hadn’t yet been officially confirmed, though Kolde noted, “We’re looking at another series in the Castlevania universe. I can’t tell you any real specifics at this point; we can certainly talk about it once those details are solidified.”

Teasing that there’s still plenty of material to adapt from the video games, Kolde added: “As you know, there’s a lot of great games, great storylines, great characters in the Castlevania world going back, prior to Trevor’s story, and going on into the future with Soma Cruz and things like that. There’s plenty there to play with — I’m not going to tell you where we’re going to play — but those details will come out soon enough. [Laughs] I think Castlevania fans will be thrilled.

Castlevania, the Netflix series, was heavily inspired by some of the games like Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It follows Trevor Belmont, Alucard, and Sypha Belnades as they defend the nation of Wallachia against Dracula. The series featured the voice talents of Richard Armitage, James Callis, Graham McTavish, Alejandra Reynoso, Tony Amendola, Matt Frewer, Emily Swallow, Theo James, and Adetokumboh M’Cormack. Adi Shankar developed the series for Netflix and Warren Ellis served as the writer. Sam Deats, Adam Deats, and Spencer Wan directed.

There’s no information about when the Castlevania spinoff will be released. Meanwhile, plenty of other big news is coming out from the streamer from the Geeked Week event. This includes sneak peeks at other animated projects based on Arcane, Splinter Cell, and Cuphead. The news of Castlevania getting a spinoff comes to us from Netflix Geeked on Twitter.
