Dead to Me actress Christina Applegate was left visibly emotional upon seeing the reaction from the crowd as she took to the stage to present two awards at this year’s 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. The actress, who revealed that she had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis back in 2021, was left teary after being met with a standing ovation, cheers, and applause, before joking that the crowd was “totally shaming me with disability by standing up.”
“Thank you so much. Oh my God, you’re totally shaming me with disability by standing up. It’s fine…body not by Ozempic.”
Presenting the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, which was won by Ayo Edebiri for her role in the FX series The Bear, Applegate paid tribute to her breakout role on Days of Our Lives.
“OK, let’s go. Some of you may know me as Kelly Bundy from Married… With Children or Samantha from Samantha Who? or Jen Harding from Dead to Me. Very few of you probably know me from that debut – I’m going to cry, more than I’ve been crying – Baby Burt Grizzell on Days of Our Lives. It was my breakout role.”
Applegate, who was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance as Jen Harding in the Netflix series Dead to Me, went on to say that it has been “an honor to play funny, flawed, complex characters like the women nominated for supporting actress in a comedy series.”
Applegate’s diagnosis has heavily affected her ability to perform, with the actress commending co-star Linda Cardellini and showrunner Liz Feldman for their support when filming the final season of Dead to Me.

Christian Applegate Has Now Retired From Acting on Screen
Christina Applegate has since revealed that she has now affectively retired from acting on camera, saying last year that she can not “even imagine going to set.”
“I can’t even imagine going to set right now. This is a progressive disease. I don’t know if I’m going to get worse. I can do voiceover stuff because I have to support my family and keep my brain working.”
She has, however, said she would return to provide the voice of Kelly Bundy in an animated revival of Married… with Children, which is reportedly now in development.
“I can’t really say much, but all I know is that all four of us are attached to it. It’s not in our hands now, so we’re just kind of waiting.”
As for the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, both The Bear and Succession continued to dominate, with the former winning for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, while the latter walked away with Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
