Conan O’Brien Honored by Colleagues as Late Night TV Run Comes to an End

Thursday night will mark the final episode of Conan on TBS, and some of host Conan O’Brien’s colleagues are joining fans in paying tribute online. In November, it was announced that Conan came to an end on TBS with the final episode on June 24th. O’Brien will continue to work with an upcoming variety show for HBO Max, but his absence on late night television still marks the end of an era. In honor of the occasion, many of O’Brien’s friends in the business are posting their thoughts on Twitter.

“Tonight, two men I respect tremendously close a chapter of their brilliant careers,” tweeted Jimmy Kimmel. “Conan made doing his job the hard way look easy. He & Andy [Richter] are among the funniest of the many funny people I’ve met. Congratulations to you & your co-workers on a remarkable achievement.”

Posting a photo of herself alongside O’Brien, writer Dana Schwartz wrote: “I was a deeply unhappy pre-med student, and then I interned at Conan and realized that I could just do this for the rest of my life. So deeply grateful to that show, and all of the writers who worked there who were so wildly encouraging.”

“I’m going to miss seeing Conan in late night,” adds writer Mike Drucker. “I remember how much that show meant to me as a little kid and how upset my mom was when I asked her to explain the masturbating bear.”

Alyssa Limperis, who appeared in various sketches on Conan, said in another post: “Tonight is Conan’s last show. I am forever grateful that I got to be in sketches for such an amazing show & brilliant comedian. Everyone treated me with insane kindness & made me feel at home. Conan is simply the best. I’ll miss it but am excited to see what everyone does next.”

A tweet from Tenacious D includes a video of an appearance of theirs on the show, along with the message: “JB, KG & @ConanOBrien sitting in a tree, they all ummm love late night TV. JB is Conan’s last guest of his late night career. Thanks for always welcoming the D-family to the show over the years. Sorry JB blew your head off that one time! Tune in tonight at 11/10c!”

“Made my tv debut on Conan in 2012,” adds comedian Samuel J. Comroe. “Dream come true. Backstage he said ‘you were outstanding! Come back whenever you want!’ The next day I asked if I could come back. He said no lol Congrats on an amazing run Conan! One of the best to do it.”

O’Brien has been hosting late night television since the launch of Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1993. He briefly hosted The Tonight Show between 2009 and 2010 (and we won’t get into that whole story here) before moving on to TBS for the talk show Conan, which debuted in 2010. He will host a new weekly variety show for HBO Max.

“In 1993 Johnny Carson gave me the best advice of my career: ‘As soon as possible, get to a streaming platform.’ I’m thrilled that I get to continue doing whatever the hell it is I do on HBO Max, and I look forward to a free subscription,” O’Brien said in a statement at the time.

We also haven’t seen the last of Conan O’Brien on TBS, even though Conan is ending its run on the station. O’Brien will continue to produce his Conan Without Borders specials for TBS. Despite his continued presence on the small screen, it still feels like the end of an era now that we’re heading into a time without O’Brien and Richter hosting a talk show on television. But all good things, as they say, must come to an end. You can see what others are saying about the series ending on Twitter.

I truly wish I had been a guest on Conan’s show! I did a few bits back in the day!

Hurts my heart a little that Conan is ending, not only because I love him & everyone there so much, but it was still a dream of mine to perform on the show. I’ve never landed a late night set after 10+ years of trying…and his show was one that I still had hope for!

As a kid, I loved staying up late to watch Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and I always dreamed of getting to be on the show. I put it on my vision board and eventually got to show that to him… https://t.co/sGy4Fbq5u8
