    for a third season.

AMC has renewed The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol for a third season, two months ahead of the second season’s premiere. The spinoff of the hit zombie apocalypse series stars Norman Reedus, who is joined by fellow Walking Dead alumnus Melissa McBride, whose character Carol is searching for Reedus’ Daryl in the wastelands of France. The announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con, where both Reedus and McBride appeared to promote the series.

According to a report by Deadline, production on the third season will begin next month, and filming will shift from France to Madrid, Spain, a change Reedus had recently teased to fans. AMC’s commitment to the series isn’t much of a risk, as the series earned high ratings last year, proving that the franchise still had life in it.

A trailer for season 2 of the series was released on Friday at a Comic-Con panel attended by Reedus and McBride, along with series showrunner David Zabel, executive producer Greg Nicotero, and cast member Louis Puech Scigliuzzi, who plays Laurent.

Season 1 opened with Daryl soon after the end of the final episode of The Walking Dead, still on the road in search of a purpose. He gets into trouble near the coast of Maine, is captured, and put aboard a ship sailing to France. He manages to escape and link up with a group of survivors in Paris. The season ended with Daryl considering staying in France rather than going home, while Carol is on his trail, trying to find him. The second season trailer shows the two struggling against enemies alive and dead, and ends with a tease of their reunion.

In a statement announcing the third season renewal, McBride voiced her excitement about the show’s move to Spain.

“I’m really appreciating the new challenges for Daryl and Carol being so far from all they’ve ever known…
There’s still so much ahead to unpack in France for the coming season 2, and a breathtaking finale.
And now Spain! I already know that David Zabel’s storytelling is making the most of all that is so beautiful and unique to Spain. We start shooting there in just a few weeks… such excitement looking forward!”

What Other Walking Dead Spinoffs Are There?

Well before the final episode of The Walking Dead aired in November 2022, production had already begun on three new spinoffs that expanded the franchise, with actors from the series striking out on their own.

The Walking Dead: Dead City premiered in June 2023, and found Maggie (Lauren Cohan) crossing paths with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) when she goes to New York City in search of her kidnapped son.

Daryl Dixon premiered that September, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, featuring the return of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) to the franchise, premiered in February of 2024. Dead City has been renewed for a second season, but future episodes of The Ones Who Live remain up in the air.

Those series followed three previous spinoffs. Fear The Walking Dead premiered in 2015 and ran for eight seasons, airing its final episode in October 2023. It starred Kim Dickens and Colman Domingo, with Walking Dead series regular Lennie James crossing over to join in the series’ fourth season.

The Walking Dead: The World Beyond premiered in 2020 and lasted only two seasons, a victim of poor ratings and an underwhelming response from disappointed fans. Tales of the Walking Dead, an anthology series, premiered in 2022 with six episodes. No new episodes have been announced.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – The Book of Carol
will premiere its second season on AMC and AMC+ on September 29, 2024.
