Dawn of the Jedi Gets Production Start Date From Director James Mangold

Like every Star Wars project, Dawn of the Jedi remains shrouded in mystery, but James Mangold has recently clued audiences in to when the movie could hit theaters. Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi is taking audiences back in time to the birth of the Jedi Order, some 25,000 years before the original trilogy — you could say it will be set “A long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.” Mangold’s standalone movie is one of the few upcoming Star Wars films in the pipeline after Disney and LucasFilm culled the overly packed slate of post-sequel trilogy projects.

Speaking to Empire Magazine to promote his upcoming Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, James Mangold revealed when Dawn of the Jedi could begin filming. During the interview, the acclaimed director confirmed that, once he is finished with A Complete Unknown’s post-production and press, he’ll be hard at work on Dawn of the Jedi. The director confirmed that production could begin as early as next year (although he did not specify a month). Should the project begin shooting next year, fans are hoping to see Dawn of the Jedi in theaters in late 2026 (optimistically) or 2027 (realistically).

Dawn of the Jedi will show an era of the Star Wars universe never before seen on screen. The birth of the Jedi Order was previously shown in the Legends comic books of the same name. However, when the Star Wars IP was taken over by Disney from LucasFilm, much of the Legends cannon was scrapped. However, Disney seems to be slowly embracing and reintroducing the Legends stories, which long-time Star Wars fans absolutely adored.

The Upcoming Star Wars Movies Are Currently Uncertain

James Mangold revealing Dawn of the Jedi’s potential production window is the first major update Star Wars fans have received in a long time about the upcoming movies. Following the sequel trilogy (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker), Disney announced an inordinate number of new projects. Long-time Star Wars creatives Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni were both given standalone projects. Fan-favorite characters Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) and Rey Skywalker (Daisy Ridley) were also granted their own movies. The franchise also welcomed new creative voices like Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarök) and Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman).

Related The Star Wars Mandoverse Has Already Overstayed Its Welcome

While Star Wars is going all in on the Mandoverse with spin-offs and feature films, the franchise might need to move on from this era of stories.

At present, Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu (a movie sequel to the beloved Disney+ series The Mandalorian), James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey-focused Star Wars: New Jedi Order are the three projects confirmed to still be in development. It is believed that Dave Filoni’s standalone movie is also still being worked on, as is the Donald Glover-starring Lando movie, although the latter two projects have had no updates in recent months. As for Disney+ shows, the Star Wars universe is still committed to adventures on the small screen. The next series to hit the streamer will be Skeleton Crew, starring Jude Law, Nick Frost, Kyriana Kratter, Jaleel White, and Kerry Condon. Skeleton Crew premieres on Disney+ on December 3, 2024.
