Dexter Revival Brings Back Jennifer Carpenter as Deb Morgan

Jennifer Carpenter will return in Showtime’s Dexter revival series. In the original series, which ran for eight seasons between 2006 and 2013, Carpenter played the main role of Deb Morgan, the sister of Michael C. Hall’s Dexter Morgan. Her character was famously killed off in the series finale, making it seem unlikely she’d be involved in the upcoming revival. Now, THR reports that she’s going to return as Deb Morgan after all.

Set ten years after the series finale, the Dexter revival will consist of ten episodes. The story picks up with Dexter living with a new identity in New York where his past eventually catches up with him. Word is Carpenter will be featured in flashback scenes, though it’s unclear how many episodes this will entail. She joins fellow Dexter alum John Lithgow as another cast member whose character had previously been killed.

In Lithgow’s case, we can expect his appearance as the Trinity Killer to be rather brief. Recently speaking with Deadline, Lithgow confirmed that the limited series would include all kinds of “wonderful surprises and callbacks” from the previous seasons of Dexter. He also said that his return as the Trinity Killer only required a single afternoon of shooting, and how he came to get involved was as simple as showrunner Clyde Phillips giving him a call and asking.

“He said, ‘Can you come just to spend one day in The Berkshires?'” Lithgow explained. “I said, ‘Of course I can,’ and that’s exactly what it was. As all Dexter fans know, we saw the end of the Trinity Killer, so that by definition means it’s a flashback. It was just wonderful to rejoin that gang-including Michael and Jennifer Carpenter and Clyde Phillips.”

Phillips previously served as the showrunner for the first four seasons of Dexter and is back in the same capacity for the revival. Phillips and Hall also executive produce alongside John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Bill Carraro, Scott Reynolds, and Marcos Siega. Six of the revival’s ten episodes will also be directed by Siega. Clancy Brown will play the main villain with other cast members including Julia Jones, Alano Miller, Johnny Sequoyah, and Jack Alcott.

There are currently no plans to make additional seasons of Dexter on Showtime following this limited revival, but you never know what can happen if the show is a success. As of now, Phillips is heading into the revival as a way to give Dexter a proper sendoff after many fans were unhappy with the original show’s series finale. That doesn’t mean the events of the original show didn’t happen, as Deb and the Trinity Killer are still dead, but hopefully fans will be more satisfied with how this revival ends.

“We basically do get to start from scratch,” Phillips said of the series, via THR. “Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale.”

An official release date hasn’t been set, but Dexter is expected to be back with its revival series on Showtime this fall. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
