Dexter Season 9 Star Teases the Return of Original Cast

The upcoming Dexter revival will be even darker than the show’s original run, according to new cast member Jamie Chung. The Lovecraft Country star will join the new series alongside returning actor Michael C. Hall, who reprises the role of the charming serial killer with a code.

“The original series happened over 10 years ago. So, there’s certainly a different vibe of the way the actual show is shot in terms of the aesthetic. I do think it’s a little darker. It takes place in upstate New York and as we know from the last season, Dexter’s hiding. So, it certainly carries on and you have a lot of fresh faces, but a lot of familiar ones. I think it will certainly satisfy everyone’s appetite. Especially if you’re a big Dexter fan.”

Jamie Chung teasing that the show will be darker than before does not come as too much of a surprise. Isn’t everything darker these days? But her comments regarding familiar faces will no doubt raise a few eyebrows, especially considering the recent statement from James Remar, who played the titular character’s deceased father and subconscious saying, “They didn’t ask any of the original cast back, so I don’t know what they’re doing…I really have no idea. It’s too bad because all of us wanted to go back. But, you know, it’s their show, so they’re gonna do what they wanna do.”

This news from Chung though strongly suggests that other characters from Dexter’s past will indeed appear and adds weight to the ongoing rumor that Dexter’s dear-departed sister Debra Morgan, played by Jennifer Carpenter, will return, perhaps in the ghostly, guiding form that we often saw Dexter’s father in throughout the original series.

Dexter has become infamous for its disappointing finale, with many hoping that the character would be brought back to make amends. Michael C. Hall recently explained why now was the right time to bring Dexter back saying, “This one, a lot of it has to do with time passed. This is going to happen in real time, as if as much time has passed since the finale happened,” the actor revealed recently. “And yeah, we kind of just got the creative band back together again. Clyde Phillips is back, who was the showrunner for the first four seasons, running the show. And Marcos Siega, who is one of the directors. We’re gonna shoot it like a long, 10-hour movie. It was a combination of the scripts and the timing. I always thought maybe the time will reveal itself when it’s the right time to do it and it did. And I’m excited.”

Alongside Chung, Julia Jones (Goliath, The Mandalorian), David Magidoff (The Morning Show) and Alano Miller (Jane the Virgin) will also star, with Clancy Brown (Invincible) starring as the central villain Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake. Production on the Dexter revival began back in February 2021. The 10-episode limited series will also see Clyde Phillips returning as showrunner and has scheduled a fall 2021 premiere date.
