Doctor Who Producer Promises Epic Regeneration For Jodie Whittaker

Jodie Whittaker’s time on Doctor Who is nearing an end. The actor has just two more episodes before she will turn over the keys to the TARDIS to a new actor. And while we do not know yet know who that will be, we now know that the regeneration scene will be something epic.

According to a report from Digital Spy, the producer of Doctor Who promises that Whittaker’s regeneration will be something very special and epic. The report takes from an interview with Doctor Who Magazine. Promising an emotional end to the 13th Doctor’s reign, executive producer Matt Strevens said that he thinks fans will be satisfied with how Whittaker’s story arc concludes.

“The final story is a massive, feature-length epic – it was huge to shoot – with lots of surprises for fans of all ages. Jodie gets a really good send-off. I think it will push everybody’s buttons.”

Whittaker currently has two episodes left before she departs. Her next episode will be an Easter special called “Legend of the Sea Devils” and it will feature an enemy first seen during the Third Doctor’s (John Pertwee) era. These bipedal sea-adapted reptiles will certainly cause chaos for the Doctor and her companions as they encounter them in 19th century China.

Whittaker’s final episode will come much later in the year during the BBC’s centenary celebrations. Not much is known about the episode, other than that it is expected to be a feature-length episode, and it will feature her regeneration into the Fourteenth Doctor. This will also be the final episode overseen by showrunner Chris Chibnall.

Russell T. Davies Still Has Not Announced Whittaker’s Replacement

BBC

The new showrunner for Doctor Who, Russell T. Davies, has yet to announce who the Fourteenth Doctor will be, although such an announcement should be expected soon as the Fourteenth Doctor will be revealed in Whittaker’s final episode isn’t far off. The Fourteenth Doctor’s first full episode will be the 60th-anniversary episode of Doctor Who which will be the first episode overseen by Davies. Although Davies has not announced who the Fourteenth Doctor will be, rumors have been flying as to who might occupy the TARDIS next. The last official word we heard was that casting was commencing and was still ongoing but that no decision had been made.

One interesting rumor that has been getting widespread attention is that the actor who played the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant, will actually be coming on board to play the Fourteenth Doctor for a one-season stint in a new character and not reprising his Tenth Doctor role. The rumor continues that after that one season would then hand off the keys to the TARDIS to a new Doctor. This is an unconfirmed rumor and based on how busy Mr. Tennant is, it is probably unlikely to be true.

Whoever takes over for Whittaker has a great deal of work ahead of him or her as ratings have fallen a bit during the Chris Chibnall era, and it is the hope of the BBC that putting Russell T. Davies back behind Doctor Who will contract the ratings. Davies does have a track record of success with Doctor Who. He has cast two excellent doctors before in Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, so the hope is that he will select the right actor.

Hopefully an announcement will come soon as to the Fourteenth Doctor will be and we will meet the Fourteenth Doctor later this year in what is now being called an epic regeneration episode.
