  • Golden Globes: Eddie Murphy References Will Smith Slap During Speech

The legendary comedian and actor accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award Tuesday night — and ended his speech with a laugh.

Just when we thought Will Smith’s Oscar slap was in the rear-view, Eddie Murphy swoops in to reignite the scandal. The legendary comedian and actor offered some advice for showbiz up-and-comers during Tuesday night’s Golden Globes — advice that Chris Rock could have used before cracking those jokes about Jada Pinkett Smith last year…

“I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind,” Murphy said at the end of his acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award. “It’s a blueprint, and I’ve followed it my whole career. It’s very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business… and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”

The joke resulted in roaring laughter from the audience. It was a lovely reminder that Eddie Murphy is simply one of the funniest people of all time. Just when we think the funny man is going to stay totally serious during that award speech, Murphy successfully pulls a fast one. Speaking of the award, here’s a closer look at the history behind the Hollywood Foreign Press Assocation’s annual honor.

About the Cecil B. DeMille Award

Paramount Pictures

Cecil Blount DeMille was a film director, producer and actor. During the 1900s, he made at least 70 films, both silent and with sound. He is acknowledged as a founding father of the American cinema and the most commercially successful producer-director in film history. It’s no surprise, then, that a seemingly prestigious ceremony like the Golden Globes would name an award about DeMille.

This year, a pair of Murphy’s were honored — Eddie Murphy received the DeMille honor in recognition of his film career, while Ryan Murphy was handed the Carol Burnett Award for his versatile life in television. Ryan Murphy used his speech to recognize openly gay or trans performers he worked with, while Eddie Murphy was more irreverent by the time he wrapped up his speech — poking fun at a viral moment from last year’s Oscars. Can Will Smith ever fully bounce back from last year’s mishap?
