Eva Longoria is back in front of the camera in Land of Women, the stellar new Apple TV+ series that has the makings of a big hit. The dramedy finds Longoria playing Gala, a different kind of desperate housewife, whose life implodes when her husband (James Purefoy) fails to repay a debt to some very shady criminals. Pushed to the brink, the slick businesswoman grabs her aging mother, Julia (Carmen Maura), and her own teenage daughter, Kate (Victoria Bazúa), and the trio flees to Julia’s hometown in northern Spain.
As dangerous criminals close in and her husband vanishes, Gala is forced to make alliances with a striking Spaniard (Santiago Cabrera as Amat) and a posse of women running a vineyard and the iconic winery collective in the charming wine town. Comedic twists and turns abound. “I grew up in a land of women,” she told us when asked about the females that influenced her, allowing her to choose her path. “I grew up with nine aunts, three sisters, no brothers — all of them educated and economically independent. I grew up with a lot of great examples of who I wanted to be.” She added:
I also have an amazing group of women in my life. We often talk about… ‘Why are our husbands still here? We’d be so much happier if we all just lived in a commune with our children.’

Eva Longoria & Santiago Cabrera and Eva Longoria on Inspirational Women
“I think I’m always inspired by women. And professionally, too. As a director, I was very inspired by Ava DuVernay [Origin, Selma], and Patty Jenkins [Wonder Woman], and Patricia Regan [The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Carol], and Patricia Cardoso [Real Women Have Curves]. Just seeing, like, ‘Oh, okay, a woman can do that.’ I don’t have to look far to see inspirational women.”
Being surrounded by inspirational ladies was part of the appeal of Land of Women for costar Santiago Cabrera. From Big Little Lies and The Flight Attendant to Star Trek: Picard and The Cleaning Lady, the actor has benefitted from being surrounded by great actresses. The actor noted:
“I’ve always been inspired by women. My grandmother was a big inspiration for me. She was a very Catholic woman, but the most open-minded woman I’ve met. I feel when you have a spirituality and you are truly connected to something for the right reasons, your mind is broad. I see that a lot in so many women. [Women] are more grounded, always more in the real world. That’s why I’d just love to see a power shift… there’s still a lot to do because
I think the world is a better place… filled with a lot of women leaders, especially politically
. The world would probably be…”
“More compassionate,” Longoria finished his sentence.

The Desperate Housewives alumnus also produced Devious Maids, Grand Hotel, Telenovela, and Gordita Chronicles. She’s also a bona fide wine lover, so we asked her what kind of wine Land of Women would be, and Longoria said:
“Bold and complicated and expensive. No, bougie.” She went on to say the show is also, “Earthy. You know, I was just saying this. I love genre mixing shows. I like a dramedy. I like a sci-fi comedy. I like a scary comedy. I love when genres bump up against each other. So, I think, if this was a wine, it’d be a blend.”
