Fans are looking back at Game of Thrones and celebrating the show’s impressive run on the 10th anniversary of the series premiere. In 2011, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss introduced the series to HBO viewers. Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels from author George R. R. Martin, the series chronicled the violent quarrels between powerful families tot ake control of the legendary Iron Throne.
As most of us now know, Game of Thrones didn’t exactly end on a high note, as the eighth and final season has been widely criticized by fans. In fact, a popular petition was launched to completely remake the final season from scratch to put it more on par with the first seven seasons, each of which consistently garnered immense critical acclaim. Despite the ending controversy, many fans are still not overlooking the incredible journey to get there in the prior years, and people far and wide continue to celebrate the show’s legacy.

Backlash over the finale aside, Game of Thrones enjoyed one of the most successful runs in television history. Pulling in record-high viewership in the ratings for years, the series garnered a whopping 59 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, among many other prestigious honors and awards. Its success has also led to multiple prequel shows entering development to further expand the franchise, though time will tell if any of these shows are able to reach the same heights of the original series.
In any case, it’s the tenth anniversary of Game of Thrones, and it’s not a bad time to restart the series from a new perspective. You just might want to skip the final season if you recall being deeply disappointed by how things ended in season 8. Binge the entire series now on HBO Max.
