Game of Thrones Spin-Off 10,000 Ships Gets Helstrom Writer Amanda Segel

The Game of Thrones universe on HBO continues to expand. Several spin-offs based on George R.R. Martin’s beloved fantasy novels are currently in development at the network and one of those projects has just locked in a writer. 10,000 Ships, which will center on Princess Nymeria, will be written by Amanda Segel (Helstrom, Person of Interest). While the show has yet to be handed a series order, this is an important step in the right direction.

According to a new report, Amanda Segel has been tapped to write the series. No further details were provided at this time. Segal has served as a writer on hit shows such as Without a Trace and Person of Interest. Some of her recent writing credits include The Mist and Marvel’s Helstrom, which debuted on Hulu last year. In many cases, Segel has also served as a producer on these shows. She was a co-executive producer on Helstrom, for example.

10,000 Ships, the tentative title for the spin-off, was originally revealed to be in development back in March. This show would, in theory, take place roughly 1,000 years before the events depicted in Game of Thrones. HBO is also developing another GoT series, going under the title of 9 Voyages from Bruno Heller, with another show in the works centered on Flea Bottom. Additionally, an animated Game of Thrones series is said to be in the works. Plus, the Dunk & Egg novellas are being discussed for a possible show. The Princess Nymeria show that Amanda Segel has boarded is described as follows.

“The drama is expected to follow the journey made by warrior queen Princess Nymeria and the surviving members of the Rhoynars, who travelled from Essos to Dorne following their defeat by the Valyrian Freehold in the Second Spice War.”

All of these other potential shows are in addition to House of the Dragon, the upcoming spin-off that is set to arrive next year. HBO had also previously filmed a pilot for a different prequel series starring Naomi Watts that was not picked up to series. The main takeaway here is that the network sees the GoT universe as something worth expanding in a big way. Even though Game of Thrones concluded its run on a sour note, it was one of the most popular shows in the world during its run. And the universe created by George R.R. Martin is rich and expansive.

While HBO would have undoubtedly pursued a spin-off on its own, the launch of HBO Max has likely helped fuel the fire to get further shows set in this universe going. The streaming service is attempting to compete with Netflix. That is a big part of the WarnerMedia merger with Discovery. And having high-profile, franchise-based content is a big way to win over subscribers. If HBO Max can host several shows set in the GoT universe at once, much like what Disney+ is doing with Star Wars, that could be majorly attractive. This news comes to us via Deadline.
