George R.R. Martin has seen a rough cut of the first episode of House of the Dragon and shared his opinion online. Martin, the author of the Game of Thrones series, hasn’t been quiet about his views regarding the adaptations of his work, and, fortunately, the author’s reaction towards the first episode is quite positive.
Martin is on record saying he was not a fan of the ending of the Game of Thrones series, an opinion shared by many fans of the show. However, the end of the show is not based on Martin’s own work, as season 8 already went past where the book series had stopped. Martin is currently working on the next chapter of the Game of Thrones series with The Winds of Winter.

However, Martin still took time to share to his blog his thoughts on House of the Dragon, the upcoming prequel/spinoff series coming to HBO in 2022. Martin praised a rough cut of the first episode, which he called powerful, dark, and visceral. He also praised the work being done by producers Ryan J. Condal and Miguel Sapochnik. Here is the full quote:
“I am anticipating House Of The Dragon pretty eagerly myself, for what it’s worth. Okay, I am hardly objective. And I know a lot of what you will be seeing. (I, um, wrote the book). Also … mum’s the word now, don’t tell anyone… I’ve seen a rough cut of the first episode. And loved it. It’s dark, it’s powerful, it’s visceral… just the way I like my epic fantasy.”
“Ryan and Miguel have done an amazing job, and the cast… just as with Game of Thrones, most viewers will only have heard of a few of the actors, but I think you are going to fall in love with a lot of them. (Only to have your heart broken later when… but no, that would be telling). I think the Targaryens are in very good hands. Anticipate away. I do not think you will be disappointed.”
House of the Dragon takes place 200 years before the main events of Game of Thrones. It will follow the civil war that breaks out within House Targaryen and its effects on the seven kingdoms. This is also a time where dragons are plentiful and rule the skies. The series stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine, and Olivia Cooke.
Anticipation for House of the Dragon shows that despite an ending that angered much of the fanbase, Game of Thrones fans are still looking forward to delving back into this fantasy realm. This series may not hit all the highs of the original, but maybe it can stick the landing better.
