While Grant Gustin is ending his run as the titular speedster in The Flash, he couldn’t help but keep a special prop as a way of keeping the character with him forever. This week, the show comes to an end after nine seasons, and with no current shows set in that world in production, the finale marks the end of the Arrowverse as we know it. Gustin is also looking forward to seeing where his career takes him next, but though it’s still been emotional for him and the rest of the cast to say goodbye to the show.
When the series was wrapping up production, Gustin had decided that he needed to take something from the set as a special memento. He initially didn’t know what that would be, and he was running out of time to figure it out as the shoot was reaching its end. Right then, as Gustin explains in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he realized that he had Barry’s Flash ring in his pocket, and that made the decision easy for him at that point. As the actor says:

“I knew I was going to keep one thing, but I didn’t know that it was going to be the ring. Right as we were finishing, I was like, ‘This is going to stay in my pocket.’ Now it’s in a drawer at home with all of my important jewelry. I put it on, actually, the other day.”

The Flash wasn’t canceled by The CW, as Gustin had decided that it was time for him to move on from the show. Part of that comes from starting a family, as the actor also explains in the interview. He has that in common with Barry Allen, so for Gustin, that makes ending the series at this particular point that much better. He also feels that it’s better to end the show on a “high note,” and he is happy with how the story is wrapped up with the final episode.
“It is poignant that it finishes as Barry and I are both starting a family. I had a lot of figuring things out to do over the course of the nine years, and same for Barry. None of us knew what we were getting into when this started or how big it was going to be, and I’m just proud of the way we all grew together and always continued to show up for the show and do the best we could. I think we really finished on a high note.”
Whether we see Gustin as The Flash again remains to be seen. Although the show is ending, Gustin has teased that he’s still open to making special appearances as that character, who will always be “very close” to his heart. With that said, he has denied rumors that he appears in the feature film version of The Flash coming this summer, and there are no known plans for him to appear in any other DC projects as that character at this time.
The final episode of The Flash will air on May 24 on The CW.
