How I Met Your Mother sequel series, How I Met Your Father, will feature ties and potentially even appearances from the original cast teases Hilary Duff. Since Hulu gave the show a straight-to-series order last month, How I Met Your Mother fans had been left wondering how closely it would follow the original.
“I don’t want to give it all away and the script is definitely being changed a little bit. But it does tie in and, you know, hopefully, we’ll have some fun guest appearances from the original cast.”

This news is sure to excite fans of the hugely successful sitcom and will have them wondering how exactly Josh Radnor’s Ted Mosby or Cobie Smulders’ Robin Scherbatsky could be brought into the fray for a cameo. Perhaps they’ll even use it as a chance to make up for the much-criticized finale…
Since the announcement of How I Met Your Father, many have even theorized that Hilary Duff’s character will turn out to be the daughter of Neil Patrick Harris’s fan-favorite character Barney Stinson. While this is unlikely (his daughter’s name is Ellie for a start), it is possible that Duff could be related to one of the other original characters. Failing that, the How I Met Your Mother gang could easily be written into more random cameos that are to delight the fanbase.
Hilary Duff went on to offer some details regarding the premise of the sequel series, and it sounds like things will be a little more different than its predecessor, with How I Met Your Father offering up three potential paternal candidates right from the beginning.
“There’s great characters and I’m going to get to have another on-set family, another TV family. There’s so much opportunity for love stories with this show because it’s Sophie and then, three dudes. So, it’s going down that whole rabbit hole of like, well, which one was the father? And you get to like go through all of Sophie’s young experience of finding love and dating and what that’s like in the modern world.”
Created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays for CBS, How I Met Your Mother ran for 9 seasons from 2005 to 2014, and follows the main character, Ted Mosby, and his group of friends in New York City’s Manhattan. As a framing device, Ted, in the year 2030, recounts to his son, Luke, and daughter, Penny, the events from 2005 to 2013 that led him to meet their mother.
Hulu’s upcoming sequel series will follow a similar pattern, picking up in the near future with Hilary Duff’s Sophie, who is telling her son the story of how she met his father: a story that will catapult us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.
Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger are set to write the series, and if it manages to find even a fraction of the success of the original then it will be a big win for Hulu. This comes to us from Entertainment Weekly.
