Jaleel White Returns as Urkel in Family Matters Animated Special Did I Do That to the Holidays?

WarnerMedia are bringing Family Matters character Steve Urkel back to screens in animated form with the announcement that they are adding Did I Do That to the Holidays? a Steve Urkel Story to their line-up of shows and movies heading to Cartoon Network as part of their ACME Night programming block, which kicks off this month. The new addition will add DC movie Merry Little Batman and new series such as Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and Aquaman: King of Atlantis which will all make their debuts on the network before heading to HBO Max next year.

Original Family Matters cast member Jaleel White will reprise his role as Urkel and also produce the movie, which adds to Warner’s list of upcoming festive offerings. The animated film is written by Wyatt Cenac, while Bryan Newton is on board as supervising director for the Warner Bros. Animation production.

The official description of Did I Do That to the Holidays? A Steve UrkelStory reads, “The holiday season has arrived, and brilliant but accident-prone Steve Urkel has already ruined his local celebration by publicly humiliating a shopping mall Santa. In his attempt to make things right and score some nice points with the big guy in the North Pole, Steve creates an invention that only makes things worse. Using his big brain and even bigger heart, Steve must find the real Santa to see if together they can help the city rediscover the holiday spirit.”

White played the character of Steve Urkel on the popular sitcom Family Matters between 1989 and 1998. Urkel was the goofball neighbor of the Winslow’s, a middle-class African American family living in Chicago. Like many such iconic characters over the years, Urkel was scripted for a one-time only appearance, but after grabbing audience attention he not only became the show’s most popular character but also evolved into the sitcom’s protagonist. With his geeky look of big glasses, short pants and suspenders, his image became something of legend in pop culture, and his eccentric ways, distinctive voice and catchphrases galore, Urkel was always destined to become the stuff of sitcom legend.

While it is over two decades since Family Matters ended, White has previously reprised the role in animated form for a 2019 episode of Scooby Doo and Guess Who? The story saw Urkel aiding the cowardly canine and his gang in attempting to regain control of one of his Urkel-bots when it runs out of control. Following the end of Family Matters, White went on to be the first person to voice Sonic The Hedgehog on TV, giving the little blue speedster a voice in Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog and Sonic Underground. He has also had cameo appearances in numerous other shows such as Boston Legal, House, Castle and Psych, and last year joined the Netflix series The Big Show Show in a recurring role.

Did I Do That To The Holidays? A Steve Urkel Story has no premier date currently set, but the ACME Night block on Cartoon Network kicks off on September 19 and brings family movies and shows to Sunday evenings. The programming will movie to streaming on HBO Max in early 2022.
