Jeff Garlin is Officially Out at The Goldbergs After Misconduct Allegations

It looks like The Goldbergs is down one major cast member. Following recent allegations against Jeff Garlin of inappropriate behavior on the set, the actor is now officially done with the sitcom. According to reports, the actor will not be finishing his work on the ninth season, as his dismissal is effective immediately. It’s not yet clear how he will be written out of the series.

Per Deadline, Garlin had at least one day of shooting left when his schedule was reduced. This came after Per Deadline, this came after a number of current and former co-workers accused Garlin of misconduct, with at least one person claiming the actor is “extremely verbally and emotionally abusive.” An internal investigation was launched to look into the validity of the allegations, and now the decision has been made for Garlin to part ways with The Goldbergs.

Previously, Garlin confirmed that there were allegations against him in an interview with Vanity Fair. The actor denied that he had been inappropriate, at least intentionally, claiming that he was only trying to be “funny” on the set. Even so, Garlin also suggested that there were some issues in coming to an “agreement” about his on-set behavior, but at the time, the actor emphasized that he hadn’t been fired.

“Well, to be honest with you, there is no story,” Garlin said in the interview. “We have a difference of opinion, Sony and myself. Okay. My opinion is, I have my process about how I’m funny, in terms of the scene and what I have to do. They feel that it makes for a quote ‘unsafe’ workspace. Now, mind you, my silliness making an unsafe workspace — I don’t understand how that is… I am always a kind and thoughtful person. I make mistakes, sure. But my comedy is about easing people’s pain. Why would I ever want to cause pain in anybody for a laugh? That’s bullying. That’s just uncalled for.”

He added, “We’re trying to come to a place where we come to an agreement. Either I can behave the way [they want] or not. We’ll see, but I’m not being fired and I’ve not been fired… When I do shoot more days, just to make it go smooth, I will not be doing any of my silly stuff or anything, out of respect.”

Garlin’s Vanity Fair interview also detailed an incident in which he was alleged to have mistreated a married couple working at stand-ins on the show. An eyewitness says Garlin didn’t appear to be joking when he screamed at one of them, “Why are you always in my way? Get the f*ck out of my way.” Garlin then allegedly told the woman’s husband, “Tell your wife to get the f*ck out of my way.”

To that, Garlin claims this was a “joke that was completely missed,” insisting that he likes both of the stand-ins after having worked with them for years. In any case, this was the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of the cast and crew’s tolerance for Garlin, leading to the official complaints against him through HR. It’s not yet clear if The Goldbergs will be back after season 9 for season 10, but perhaps it’s for the best that Garlin is gone.
