Jensen Ackles Reveals He Wants to be Batman

It’s been known for a while now that after spending years playing Dean Winchester, Jensen Ackles will be reuniting with Supernatural creator Eric Kripke on season 3 of The Boys. He’ll be playing the Captain America-inspired Soldier Boy. During the weekend, Ackles also discussed the possibility of playing one of the most famous superheroes of all time.

“Batman. Let’s be clear about that. I have gotten to do the voice. Why not get to play the Bat?” Ackles said during a Q&A panel at Supernatural NJCon.

Previously, Ackles has played Batman before, but never in live-action. He voiced the Dark Knight in the two-part animated adaption of The Long Halloween, one of the most iconic Batman stories. Ackles also voiced Jason Todd, the second Robin, in the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood, an adaptation of another well-known Batman storyline. There, the role of Batman was played by Bruce Greenwood.

“Maybe someone at Gotham Knights can put in a good word for me if that role ever comes up.”

Gotham Knights is an upcoming show set to premiere on the CW. One of the cast members attached to the new show is Ackles’ former Supernatural co-star Misha Collins, whose most famous role to date was the angel Castiel. He’ll be playing Batman rogue Harvey Dent aka Two-Face.

Here’s What We Know About Gotham Knights

Warner Bros.

Despite sharing a very similar premise, Gotham Knights is totally unrelated to the also upcoming videogame of the same name. It’s about a group of teen vigilantes who must protect their city after the death of the Batman. Either way, this plot description does beg the question of why even discuss whose going to play Batman if the character’s supposed to be dead?

While it’s likely that he wouldn’t appear very often, there are numerous ways for Ackles to appear on the show as Batman. The show could potentially use flashbacks, imposters, and dream sequences. Fellow CW show Batwoman did all of those. Or maybe even a resurrection. Dean Winchester did that a couple of times, as did Jason Todd.

If Ackles were to appear on the show as Batman, that would mark the character’s fifth live-action appearance on television. The first would be the equally iconic and goofy Adam West in Batman. Followed by David Mazouz in Gotham, Ian Glen in Titans, Kevin Conroy, who’s voiced the character in numerous projects over the years, as an alternate universe version during the Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Warren Christie in the aftermentioned Batwoman.

Of course, all of this is conjecture at the moment. Gotham Knights is only at the pilot stage and has yet to be picked up for a full series order from The CW. It could just as easily go the way of the potential spinoffs for Supernatural: Bloodlines, Supernatural: Wayward Sisters, or Green Arrow & The Canaries. Or it could last for fifteen seasons.
