Jim Parsons Reveals Two Major Changes The Big Bang Theory Made After the First Pilot

It is not news that The Big Bang Theory filmed two different pilots before being green-lighted and released to become one of the most acclaimed and popular sitcoms of recent years. However, four years after the end of the series, details of that first pilot that failed to convince the team behind the show continue to come to light.

While participating in Dinner’s On Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jim Parsons shared some new information about that first episode they filmed, which was set in a different city and had a very different visual aesthetic that could have changed the way the series would be perceived:

“They changed the location to the East Coast to the West Coast, and they completely overhauled the color palette. The original pilot looked a lot like our show but it looks as if you threw a CPF filter on it and covered it with cobwebs.”

These details are added to those already known, such as that Penny’s character was originally called Katie, she was played by Amanda Walsh, and both scientists found her crying on the street after breaking up with her boyfriend, they invited her to dinner and then to live with them, since she had become homeless. So, the sitcom was going to focus on the three of them living together in the same apartment, quite different from the story that actually hit the screen.

The Big Bang Theory aired for 12 seasons and 219 episodes, and starred Parsons along with Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Mayim Bialik, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch and Kevin Sussman.

The Future of the Big Bang Theory

Warner Bros. Television

Despite the fact that the series already has its own spinoff, Young Sheldon, The Big Bang Theory universe will expand again soon as part of the long list of projects that Warner Bros. Discovery is preparing, focusing on its major franchises. While sagas like Harry Potter will have their live-action adaptations, others like The Conjuring will jump from the big screen to the small one. The Big Bang Theory, for its part, will have a new spinoff in the form of a series, although no details about its plot have been revealed.

Just like Young Sheldon, the new series could be a sequel or prequel to some of the characters we already met in the original show like Leonard or Penny, even focusing on this popular couple and their married life after the events of the finale, since they were going to become parents soon.

Another good option would be to follow characters like Raj or Stewart, who are not necessarily connected to another character from the show, which would give a lot of creative freedom to tell different stories. In fact, by focusing on Stewart, the series could have the comic book store as its main star, a very important place within the universe of The Big Bang Theory that would open the possibility of introducing a new generation of protagonists.
