Jon Cryer Really Hopes to Play Lex Luthor Again After Supergirl Finale

While Supergirl may have come to an end this week, we may not have seen the last of Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor just yet. Representing the Arrowverse’s incarnation of the iconic supervillain, Cryer has been playing Lex on Supergirl to great acclaim. While Cryer stepped into the part best known for playing neurotic chiropractor Alan Harper on Two and a Half Men, he has since become synonymous with Lex Luthor.

With the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, Cryer did appear in other CW shows briefly, though Supergirl was where he was appearing frequently. The show ended with a two-part series finale this week, and though Cryer saw this as a fitting end for his run in the role, he’s already feeling the desire to give Lex another go. As the actor tells Comicbook.com, he’s eager to head back to the Lexcorp offices in another show in the future, from Superman & Lois to Titans.

“I had been feeling like [this would be the end], but I also want to honor this version of the character. I like the Arrowverse. I think they do a great job with it. I think Superman & Lois is fantastic. I think Doom Patrol is fantastic, and Titans is pretty great. And Stargirl, I’ve only seen one episode, but it seems like fun. I thought Black Lightning was terrific. So I want to honor Lex in the Arrowverse verse. So if they’ve got a great arc for him on Superman & Lois, or The Flash, or Titans or whatever, I’m happy to find a way to come back and be a part of that.”

The ball is back in DC’s court when it comes to bringing back Jon Cryer as Lex Luthor one day. From the start, the casting was an interesting choice, as it marks a full-circle moment for Cryer. He had previously played Lenny Luthor, the bumbling nephew of Gene Hackman’s Lex Luthor, in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Who knew that one day he’d be right up there with Hackman as a fan favorite Lex Luthor actor? Last year, Cryer paid tribute to “Uncle Lex” on Hackman’s 90th birthday.

Happy Birthday, Uncle Lex!

Nobody does it better. #GeneHackman

Perhaps we can’t blame Cryer for being so interested in revisiting this role. There’s something about playing a guy like Lex Luthor that actors just really seem to enjoy. Jesse Eisenberg, who debuted in the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, has said he’s open to playing Lex again, but that it’s not up to him. Smallville star Michael Rosenbaum is also planning to voice his version of Lex in an animated series continuation.

For the fans of Cryer’s Lex, let’s hope the Arrowverse finds a way for them to see him again. Meanwhile, Lex’s arch-nemesis is getting some new projects of his own. Michael B. Jordan is developing a Superman series for HBO Max which will reportedly follow the Val Zod version of the Man of Steel. A Superman reboot has also been ordered at Warner Bros. with Ta-Nehisi Coates writing the screenplay. That movie is said to be a fresh reboot which means it could bring in a new person to play Lex Luthor. This news comes to us from Comicbook.com.
