Just announced, Family Game Fight!, the new reality game show series starring Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard, has been chosen by NBC for their special series debut after the Tokyo Olympics. The reality game show series is set to premiere Sunday, August 8 at 10:30 PM ET, immediately after the Olympics Closing Ceremony.
The new one-hour game show pits Kristen Bell and husband Dax Shepard against one another as they are “adopted” into a family of four competing for $100,000 in a series of fun-filled and larger-than-life games. This project marks the first time the husband-wife duo will team up for a television project.
The show was originally inspired by the couple’s antics on The Ellen Degeneres Show. Ellen DeGeneres serves as an executive producer alongside producers Bell and Shepard. With their popularity on Ellen’s daytime talk show, it is a no-brainer to have a show where the couple can really let loose and show their competitiveness, for which they are known. If you listen to Dax’s Armchair Expert podcast, you are privy to most of their tiffs, which often involve board game night.
“For one of our first dates, I invited Dax over for a game night at my house with a bunch of friends,” Kristen Bell said earlier this year. “He said he fell in love with me there because I was a very tiny person bossing everyone around. I fell in love with him too because he’s a very large person who could boss everyone around, but chooses not to. I’m so excited to host Family Game Fight! and play all day with my best friend.”
Shepard added: “Kristen is my favorite human to work with. She’s the most consistently funny, playful and joyful scene partner I’ve ever had. She’s also incredibly fun to look at.” Here’s a look at the announcement from Ellen, Dax and Kristen, and a taste of what you can expect.
This is the latest professional collaboration between husband and wife duo Bell and Shepard. Previous ones include the feature films Chips (which Shepard directed and in which Bell starred), When In Rome, Hit and Run and The Boss. Shepard also guest starred on episodes of Bell’s previous scripted television series, The Good Place in 2018 and Veronica Mars in 2014.
Jenny Groom, executive vice president of unscripted content for NBCUniversal showed excitement saying, “We’ve been wanting to work with them as a duo for years. Their energy is infectious, their comedic sensibility comes so naturally, and their transparency about their relationship is what makes them so relatable and lovable.”
“Kristen and Dax are simply magnetic when they’re on screen. They are a spontaneously funny and loving couple that are also surprisingly competitive in this fast-moving family competition. They are pure magic together,” said Darnell, president, Warner Bros. Unscripted Television.
Ultimate Slip ‘N Slide was originally slated for the post-Closing Ceremony premiere with Family Game Fight! taking the August 11 spot. However, due to a giardia outbreak during the water-based game show’s production, NBC ultimately decided to nix the premiere. The network has no plans for a new premiere date for game show.
