Lisa Kudrow Supports a Friends Reboot, But Doubts Old Cast Would Return

Friends star Lisa Kudrow has said that she doesn’t believe there will ever be a revival of the hit comedy series, but she is all in support for seeing a reboot with a whole new cast of characters who could bring the show into the here and now. After almost two decades off-air, Friends is still a huge crowd-pleaser, with constant reruns bringing in viewers across streaming platforms worldwide, and the HBO Max reunion special last year proved that the Friends fan base is stronger than ever. However, the chances of seeing Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, Rachel, Joey, and Ross on-screen again are pretty slim according to Kudrow, so does that mean a new cast should bring s new set of Friends into the world.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Kudrow spoke to Where is the Buzz while attending the premiere of her Disney+ movie Better Nate Than Never, and of course she was asked about the possibility of a Friends return. Sticking with previous comments on the subject, the actress shot down thoughts of a revival, but would be more than happy to see a new cast taking the show into the next generation. She said:

“I don’t think there’s going to be a Friends reboot. I mean, not with any of us in it. I would [support a reboot with new actors]. I would love to see what the ‘now’ version of that would be.”

HBO Max’s Friends Reunion Sparked Hope Of a Series Revival

Despite fans wanting a revival of Friends for years, it is something that has always seemed just out of reach, whether for money reasons, or the fact that many of the cast have other things in their lives now. Although many of them, including Kudrow, have constantly said they did not see any kind of on-screen reunion taking place, Friends: The Reunion saw the original stars coming together to talk about the phenomenal success of the show and its legacy.

As is to be expected, the airing on the show was a huge audience-puller for HBO Max and immediately the special was jumped on by some as a sign that we could still get to see new Friends episodes in the future, especially in light of so many other 90s shows enjoying highly praised revivals. However, in various interviews, all of the cast members have stated that they don’t believe there will be any new episodes, with David Schwimmer quipping in 2018 that “no one wants to see us all with crutches and walkers.”

Similar to the reboot comments made by Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston previously noted that many shows from the 90s are being rebooted with great success, but again, although she admitted to being curious as to what the show would look like now and has “fantasized about it,” the reality of it happening just isn’t there. In the end, with all 236 episodes of the original ten-season series being constantly available on one platform or another, the question is really would there be any benefit in a revival, or should the show be allowed to rest on its own merits as it is? When it comes to a reboot with new characters…well, it would be Friends in name but without the familiar stars it would run the risk of constant comparisons to the original show, and that rarely ends well.
