Maisie Williams Open to Arya Stark Return in Game of Thrones Spinoff: ‘Never Say Never’

Maisie Williams is excited about the Jon Snow series and says “never say never” on the possibility of an Arya Stark return.

Maybe we haven’t seen the last of Arya Stark after all. Just recently, the news was broken that a Game of Thrones sequel series is in development at HBO. The planned series, which is not officially greenlit just yet, would star Kit Harington reprising his role as Jon Snow. This news was surprising for many as it had previously been reported that the only spinoffs in development were all prequels.

With the Game of Thrones story potentially moving forward with the Jon Snow series, which is operating under the working title of Snow, other stars of the original show have been weighing in. Emilia Clarke revealed that Snow was personally developed by Harington, confirming the series as he had spoken with her about it. Gwendoline Christie also said she was excited by the news and would “relish” the opportunity to return as Brienne of Tarth if HBO gives her the call.

In a new interview with People, Maisie Williams has joined her former co-stars in expressing her excitement for the Jon Snow show. She is happy about the news as she feels there is still “so much story” that is left to be told in the Game of Thrones universe involving the survivors of the original series. Williams goes on to praise Harington and makes it clear she’s looking forward to the spinoff.

“Everything surrounding the story [of GOT] is very exciting. We had such a rich show, and there’s still so much story to tell. I think it’s really exciting, and I think that Kit is such a phenomenal actor. Him playing Jon Snow was just like a cultural reset. I think everything that he touches is magic, and I’m excited to see what it’s going to be.”

But Would Maisie Williams Be Willing to Return as Arya Stark?

Warner Bros. Television

Moving forward with Game of Thrones in a sequel story does present the possibility of Williams returning as Arya Stark. But would she be willing to reprise the role, perhaps in her own spinoff series if not in the Jon Snow spinoff? Williams told People that she’s open to the idea by saying “never say never,” but it would depend upon getting the right idea for Arya’s return, and she’s not quite sure that she’s there yet, explaining that she’s still learning about who Arya really is.

“It’s obviously a very exciting prospect, so never say never. I’m still learning so much from fans that I meet … and they’re always recounting the parts of the show that they love, the parts of the show that were meaningful for them and the parts of Arya’s journey that were meaningful for them. I feel like I’m learning it all for the first time in a way right now. So I’m still kind of piecing together what I think it should be, what I think would make people happy, and what I think would be fulfilling as well, as an actor, to do some kind of transition. We can’t just do the same thing that we did — it’s got to be new. But what are the parts that we would want to take with us and what are the parts that we would do differently? So I think I’m still kind of discovering that.”

Time will tell if Arya Stark returns, but it’s clearly something many fans want to see happen.
