Matthew McConaughey has revealed which season of the HBO crime anthology True Detective he thinks is the best of all. The actor was featured alongside Woody Harrelson in True Detective Season 1, one of the most acclaimed standalone TV seasons in modern television. His character, Rust Cohle, is a deeply scarred man with far too many demons inside him, and McConaughey is perfect in the role. But as good as his performance was, does that mean that True Detective Season 1 is also McConaughey’s favorite season of the anthology series? What do you think?
After four seasons, and four completely different storylines, the series stands as one of the best of its genre. However, opinions vary on which season is the best one. Only a few details were enough to confirm that all seasons could be taking place in the same universe, but they vary in tone and characters.

Matthew McConaughey has an impressive career, and these are his most famous characters.
Nevertheless, as McConaughey has said to Variety, none can match what Season 1 accomplished. He was asked if he had seen True Detective: Night Country, the most recent season and the one that links directly to Rust Cohle, and he used the opportunity to set the record straight about which True Detective is the best among all:
“I watched, I saw it. Yeah, there’s a lot about it that I appreciated. My favorite season — and I feel like I can say this objectively — is Season 1. I happen to be in that one, so I thought that was incredible, incredible television and a great series. I watched it weekly, like everyone else, on Sunday night, and that was an event for me. And I got to sit back and enjoy that. I loved the water cooler talk on Monday morning. Even though I made it, I sort of forgot what was going to happen next. It was one of the great events on TV.”
Season 1 of True Detective was a major TV event. Starring two Hollywood stars in their prime, the series was acclaimed by audiences and critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 sits at 92% on the Tomatometer, but Season 4 (Night Country) is above it with a 93% score.
Matthew McConaughey Returns With a Highly-Hyped Thriller
Black Bear
McConaughey, one of the most talented actors in modern cinema, decided to take a break a few years ago, only picking up some voice work instead of appearing on screen. However, he’s returning in 2025 with The Rivals of Amziah King, a crime thriller written and directed by The Vast of Night’s Andrew Patterson. The film stars McConaughey, Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Cole Sprouse, Owen Teague, and Scott Shepherd, among others. This is what McConaughey told Variety about returning to the craft that earned him an Academy Award in 2014 for his role in Dallas Buyers Club:
“I remembered a couple of things. One, how much I truly enjoy performing. Two, I remembered, hey, McConaughey, you’re pretty damn good at this. And three, I remembered that acting is a vacation for me, and what I mean by vacation is that when I’m performing, it’s my singular focus. When I walk out the door in the morning, my wife says, ‘go kick some ass. I got the kiddos. We’re good.’ That’s vacation. Because I’m not multitasking. I’m not compartmentalizing. I’m fully focused on finding the truth of my character.”
