The Adam Project director Shawn Levy will add his talents to the upcoming fourth season of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things, and has now teased the importance of Max Mayfield to the gang’s next adventure. In an interview with IGN, Levy revealed that Max, a character introduced in season 2 and played by Sadie Sink, will be crucial to the events of Stranger Things Season 4. Even describing one episode in particular as “a Sadie anthem.”
“Episode Four, ‘Dear Billy,’ is the episode we’ve been waiting to give Sadie Sink since the day we met her.”
Levy continued, heaping praise on Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffers and how they are able to adjust the story to suit the actors. Using Joe Keery’s fan-favorite Stranger Things crew member, Steve, as an example, Levy emphasized how important Max will be to the latest season. And it is largely thanks to how well Sadie Sink has played the role.

“This, to me, is one of the core superpowers of the Duffer brothers. They have a plan. They always have a plan, but they always watch and adjust based on what the actors deliver. So for instance, Joe Keery – Steve Harrington – that was going to be a one-episode part. Then it became a one-season part. Then it became a multi-season core franchise character. Why? Because Joe Keery f-cking delivered.”
Stranger Things Season 4 Will Find Max in a Bad Place

Stranger Things Season 4 star Sadie Sink also teased the “heartbreaking” arc that Max will undergo when the show returns. “Max in Season 4 is a little bit closer to where she was in Season 2, because she had this guard up just from being the new kid,” Sink explained. “And then in Season 3, she relaxes into something and we get to see a more of a fun and comfortable version of Max. But with Season 4, she’s reverted back to her old ways, but on another extreme. She took it to another level. So, in some ways it feels familiar, but it’s really, it’s just heartbreaking to see. It’s almost like the life has been drained out of her.”
Max’s mysterious role in Stranger Things has already been teased thanks to the recent trailer, with the character seemingly possessing powers similar to that of Eleven. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), meanwhile, seems to be having a problem with her abilities. Could these two events be connected?
Stranger Things Season 4 will pick up around six months after the Battle of Starcourt. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends is separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces thanks to a secret Soviet laboratory under Starcourt, which seeks to open the gateway to the Upside Down, allowing the entities from the Upside Down to possess people in Hawkins.
Stranger Things Season 4 will be released in two parts, with the first volume set to premiere on Netflix on May 27, 2022. The second volume will be released five weeks later on July 1, 2022.
