Megan Thee Stallion Docuseries in the Works with Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrrls Director

Megan Thee Stallion is going to be the subject of a new documentary series from her management company Roc Nation and the Emmy Award-winning Time Studios. The new series was announced on Thursday, March 24, 2022, via Variety.

Nneka Onuorah is set to direct the multi-part series. Onuorah directed Prime Video’s Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Grrrrls, which debuted on Friday, March 25, 2022. She is best known for her debut feature film 2015’s The Same Difference, which is about gender roles in the Black lesbian community, and her HBO film Legends of the Underground, which is currently nominated for a GLAAD Award for best documentary. Her other credits include a Viceland documentary about New York’s Black and Latinx ballroom community, My House (she attended balls during adolescence and walked in the Butch category), and a Netflix hybrid scripted/doc comedy series The G Word, featuring Barack Obama.

According to Variety, a press release about the project “promises that it will cover personal as well as career milestones, saying it will ‘touch on how Megan overcame various personal hurdles to thrive in her professional career.'” No platform has been set for the series.

Executive producers on the project are Time Studios’ Co-head of Documentary, Loren Hammonds, Ian Orefice, Alexa Conway, and Mike Beck from Time Studios, and Desiree Perez and Lori York from Roc Nation.

Time is Excited to Work with Megan Thee Stallion Again

Time said it had successfully worked with Megan before when she was named one of the annual Time 100 in 2020. In a statement about the new documentary series, Hammonds said:

We are thrilled to be able to work with Roc Nation to share Megan’s story with the world. Millions of people are familiar with her as an entertainer, but this series will give her a chance to share her truth as never before. Her story is a powerful one, and the accomplishments that she continues to achieve are remarkable. We feel lucky to have this opportunity to capture her at a crucial moment in her life and career, as she continues to grow exponentially in both her artistry and global impact.

Oscar-nominated actress Taraji P. Henson touched on Megan’s personal struggles in the 2020 Time 100 piece on the performer, saying, “She’s lost much of her family – her mother, her father, her grandmother – yet she is the epitome of tenacity, of pulling herself up by her bootstraps. She was shot this summer, and still, people tried to tear her down.”

However, the singer hasn’t let any of that stop her, graduating from Texas Southern University on December 11, 2021.

“Megan has quickly blossomed into one of the pre-eminent entertainers in the world, and it’s a testament to her perseverance, resilience, and professionalism,” said Perez, Roc Nation’s CEO, in a statement. “Her journey is inspirational, and we’re proud to have partnered with Time Studios to highlight her personal and professional trajectory over the years. Our hope is that this documentary will inspire viewers to stay the course and pursue their passions through the ups and downs.”
