Rumors have been circulating online for months about a potential reunion/revival of ABC’s hit sitcom Modern Family, and one of the show’s stars, Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Mitchell Pritchett), has added more fuel to that fire. Running for 11 seasons between 2009 and 2020, and picking up 22 Emmys along the way, Modern Family is among the most-popular and re-watched modern sitcoms. The series follows three households of the extended Pritchett family as they attempt to survive everyday life.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson recently spoke with TV Insider‘s The Talk and was asked to weigh in on the rumors of a reunion. Despite it only being four years since Modern Family left the air, fans are already campaigning for more, and speculation was heightened after Ferguson shared a photo from the show’s set on Instagram. When asked about the show, Ferguson had fun teasing the fans, saying “that was on the set, and yes, we’re doing a sequel. I’m just kidding.” The actor joked that he “probably shouldn’t have posted it because then I wouldn’t be having to talk about it on national television,” but did give fans something to be excited about. He continued:
“It’s something I can’t really talk about. Isn’t that annoying? I know. I was on the set with some of my cast mates. It’s not a reboot… Is it a movie? I don’t know. But listen, this is the thing I’m really excited about. Because people are so excited about this photo, I’m just thrilled that people want us back that much. I would love to do a reboot. I think you would know if we were doing one, but there is something coming out.”
Modern Family’s Cast Wants to Reunite
Nothing has been confirmed by ABC, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson is the first to confirm that “something is coming out”, joking that he might now be in trouble for giving it away. But Ferguson isn’t the only actor from the beloved comedy who’s open to returning. Nolan Gould, who plays Luke Dunphy in the show, recently said he’d love to return to work with his cast mates. Gould recently told Us Weekly he’d “jump at the chance” to return to the series. He continued:
“I love that family. I love that show. If there is anything in the works, you can best believe I’m in.”

The Pritchett family patriarch, Jay Pritchett (played by Ed O’Neil) has also weighed in on a potential reunion. O’Neil has closed the door on a reunion further than some of his former cast members. However, he said he “wouldn’t be the guy” who said no if everyone else wanted to return. Sofía Vergara, who plays Ed O’Neil’s on-screen wife, Gloria Pritchett, has also commented on returning for a revival. The actress said she’d also be open to returning, but noted that it has only been four years since the show finished, which doesn’t feel long enough to revive the series.
