Nathan Fielder Is Creating a New Comedy Series at HBO Called The Rehearsal

Following the end of Nathan for You on Comedy Central in 2017, Nathan Fielder is now preparing to launch his next television series. The actor and comedian is set to write, direct, executive produce, and star in the comedy series The Rehearsal for HBO. Stemming from an overall deal inked with HBO last year, Fielder’s new show has already been picked up straight to series at the cabler. Christie Smith and Dan McManus at Rise Management will exec produce alongside Fielder.

A half-hour comedy series, The Rehearsal is “set in a world where nothing seems to ever work out as you had hoped and features Nathan Fielder giving people the opportunity to rehearse for their own lives.” It’s unclear at this time if the show will be a typical scripted comedy series, or if it will be more along the lines of a docuseries similar to HBO’s How To with John Wilson. Fielder’s previous series on Comedy Central, Nathan For You, typically involved pranking business owners and others while playing a skewed version of himself.

Nathan Fielder is best known as the co-creator and star of the bizarre Comedy Central series Nathan For You. In the series, Fielder plays an off-kilter version of himself using his business background to help struggling businesses thrive with innovative new ideas. Giving no indication that he’s ever joking, Fielder comes up with some of the most outlandish business strategies for different establishments to try, always with awkward and hilarious results. The series ran for four seasons between 2013 and 2017 before Fielder decided to move on to something new.

“For the past five years Comedy Central had the pleasure of working with the brilliant Nathan Fielder on Nathan For You,” a statement from Comedy Central read at the time. “His innovative and quick-witted humor has made the show a comedic touchstone and we’re proud to have been a part of it. We respect Nathan’s decision to end the series and look forward to geeking out over his next project.”

He might be best known for his TV series, but Fielder has also worked as an actor for various projects. This includes a role in the 2015 holiday comedy with Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In 2017, he appeared in The Disaster Artist, a movie lampooning the creation of Tommy Wiseau’s legendary indie flick The Room. Fielder has also done voiceover work for shows like The Simpsons and Rick and Morty, and appeared on other shows like Childrens Hospital, Transparent, and Comedy Bang! Bang!.

HBO has not yet provided an official comment on the series. As such, it’s not clear when the show might be released or when filming will begin, but hopefully more information will be made available soon. Until then, fans of Fielder can go back and watch every episode of Nathan For You on the streaming platforms Hulu, HBO Max, an Paramount+. The series can also be found streaming for free on Pluto TV. Anyone who has yet to watch the show is severely missing out, and given its availability, it’s a better time than ever to watch it. This news comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter.
