Per Variety, the additional episodes of 3 Body Problem will continue the exclusive partnership that the streamer has with Benioff and Weiss under their multi-year deal to write, produce, and direct new series and films for the platform, as that pact has also been extended. There is currently no word on how many episodes Season 2 will consist of, but it has been confirmed that the story will be completed by the time the final episode of 3 Body Problem airs. Beyond the second season of the show, Benioff and Weiss are also working on the recently announced series, Death by Lightning. As for Woo, he already has an overall pact with Netflix and will also return as a co-creator, executive producer, and writer on 3 Body Problem. The trio had this to say in a joint statement:
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”
Peter Friedlander, vp of scripted series at Netflix, added:
“The extraordinary
3 Body Problem
, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo, will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End. Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership — and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.”
3 Body Problem Was a Pricey Endeavor for Netflix
3 Body Problem is reportedly one of the most expensive shows in Netflix’s history with a price tag of $20 million per episode. This doesn’t include the cost of acquiring the TV rights to Liu Cixin’s novels and marketing for the series, which is also very pricey. A renewal for the show wasn’t totally in the cards at first glance, especially after the series premiered its debut season. The start of 3 Body Problem was rather modest by splashy Netflix standards, but the series demonstrated solid legs and eventually topped Netflix’s TV chart for three weeks while spending a total of seven weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10. Reviews began divided but have become reasonably solid, registering a 79 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 78 percent audience score.
