Night Court Revival Officially Gets Series Order at NBC

It’s official, Night Court is getting rebooted. Previously, it had been announced that the classic series would be revived with returning star John Larroquette back to reprise his role. The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch is also set to star in addition to serving as an executive producer on the project. Now, NBC has officially ordered the new Night Court to series, so the show can now move forward with production.

The new Night Court comes from Warner Bros. Television, Universal Television, and After January Productions. Dan Rubin (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Happy Endings) serves as a writer and also executive produces alongside Melissa Rauch, Winston Rauch, and pilot director Pamela Fryman. John Larroquette will also be on board as a producer.

This new series serves as a continuation of the original Night Court. Now, the show will star Melissa Rauch as “unapologetic optimist” Abby Stone, the daughter of Judge Harry Stone. Abby follows in her father’s footsteps as she presides over the night shift of a Manhattan arraignment court and tries to bring order to its crew of oddballs and cynics, most notably former night court prosecutor Dan Fielding (John Larroquette).

Harry Stone was played by Harry Anderson in the original Night Court. Sadly, he passed away in 2018. Other main stars from the first Night Court have also since died, as Charles Robinson passed away in July followed by Markie Post in August. It’s unclear at this time if any other actors from the original series will be returning for the new Night Court beyond Larroquette. Certainly, it’s a big deal for Larroquette to return, as the acclaimed actor won four consecutive Emmy Awards for his role on the show.

“We definitely want to honor the original while bringing a fresh take to it, but we are just hashing that all out right now,” Melissa Rauch told Hollywood Life. “We are really really excited about it. I was a fan of the show growing up. The writer we have attached, Dan Rubin, is absolutely amazing, and having John Larroquette coming back to reprise his role is a dream come true. We are working on the details of the pilot right now, and I hope we get to bring it to everyone’s TV real soon.”

The original Night Court was created by Reinhold Weege and aired for nine seasons between 1984-1992. It is set during the night shift of a Manhattan municipal court presided over by the unorthodox judge, Harry Stone. One of the most popular shows of its era, the series was consistently up for honors at the Primetime Emmy Awards. John Larroquette won for Outstanding Supporting Actor each time he was nominated.

Previously, NBC ordered the Night Court pilot, and now production is moving forward on the full series. NBCUniversal’s Susan Rovner previously said that the network’s new pickups might air during the 2021/22 season, or they might roll over to the 2022/23 season. As of now, it’s not yet clear when NBC plans to launch the new Night Court. The show joins The Endgame with Morena Baccarin and Ryan Michelle Bathe as another series to be given a revival order this week. This news comes to us from Deadline.
