Loosely inspired by the true events of Stede Bonnet’s life, Our Flag Means Death features Rhys Darby in the role of Stede, a wealthy man who swaps his mundane land life for the thrilling escapades of a pirate. Despite becoming a captain of his own ship, Stede struggles to win the respect of his crew.
His luck changes dramatically when he crosses paths with the infamous pirate Blackbeard, portrayed by Taika Waititi. This unexpected encounter blossoms into a friendship and, perhaps, a romantic relationship. However, the previous season left viewers on a cliffhanger as Blackbeard, feeling betrayed by Stede, lashes out on some of Stede’s crew and reverts back to his sinister ways.
