Patrick Stewart’s Wife Sunny Ozell Cameos on Star Trek: Picard

Patrick Stewart’s wife, Sunny Ozell, made a rare trek onto her husband’s sound stage to film a cameo appearance in Star Trek: Picard.

An exciting, musical-related cameo took place in a recent episode of Star Trek: Picard. No, we aren’t talking about the triumphant return of the Bus Punk (Kirk Thatcher) from 1986’s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (although that was pretty neat) in the fourth episode of the season, “Watcher.” But something else entirely different. It turns out that the second season of Picard was far from done delivering incredible cameos, as Sunny Ozell, the singer-songwriter married to Sir Patrick Stewart, appeared in the seventh episode of the second season, “Monsters.”

In the episode, Ozell briefly appears on a stage alongside her band in a bar in downtown Los Angeles that is invaded by Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), who has had her consciousness merged with that of the Borg Queen (Annie Wersching). Ozell is performing the song “Take You Down,” off the band’s 2020 album, Overnight Lows. The scene was filmed in Five Star Bar in Downtown Los Angeles, located at 267 South Main Street. The bar is just one of many contemporary Los Angeles and Orange County locations that have appeared in Picard’s second season — with one of the other wink-and-a-nod filming locations being the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which was used for the Confederate Headquarters — as the series has followed its heroes as they travel back in time to the most nightmarish time period in human history: the present!

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ozell explained that she and her husband do not usually mix their personal and professional lives. However, when Stewart saw how perfect the opportunity was for Ozell to make a cameo, he cleared it with his fellow Executive Producers before offering his wife the opportunity. While this married couple may not frequently mix their personal and professional lives, that’s not the case for other couples who are adjacent to the Star Trek universe. First and foremost must be Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and his wife Majel Barrett- Roddenberry, who played many roles in multiple Trek shows. And then there is Michael and Denise Okuda, who have worked on Trek and co-authored books like Star Trek Chronology: The History of the Future.

Star Trek: Picard Additional Cameos

Still not enough Picard cameos for you? In the fifth episode of the season, “Fly Me To the Moon,” Lea Thompson appeared in a small role opposite Doctor Soong (Brent Spiner). Obviously, it makes sense to have Thompson, who played several unforgettable roles in the 1980s Back to the Future trilogy, guest star in a season about time travel that results in the future being changed. However, there’s another reason that Thompson’s cameo in this season is so exciting: she also directed two episodes, the third (“Assimilation”) and the fourth (“Watcher”).

It’s also possible that we may see more exciting actors in cameo appearances before the conclusion of Star Trek: Picard’s second season. There’s another director of the series who is already confirmed to be returning: Jonathan Frakes, who directed several Picard episodes this season, will be returning to the role of William Riker for the upcoming third and final batch of episodes.

New episodes of Picard are available for streaming on Paramount+ on Thursdays.
