Reacher, the Prime Video adaptation of Lee Child’s popular book series, has consistently delivered some of the most jaw-dropping action sequences on television in recent years. With the release of Season 3 this week, the show seems to be raising the bar even higher. However, there is one particular scene that has Alan Ritchson wishing the show didn’t adhere so closely to the books.
Reacher Season 3 follows Jack Reacher as he infiltrates a powerful crime syndicate while dealing with unfinished business from his past. In Season 3, Episode 3, “Number 2 With a Bullet,” Reacher finds himself in a heavily guarded house with no way to leave without getting caught. To meet up with a small DEA task force working with him, he has to sneak through the backyard and swim across dangerous waters. The bold escape finds Reacher climbing down massive rocks, reaching the ocean, stripping down to his underwear, putting his clothes in a bag, and diving into the water. He then gets out and meets Susan Duffy, played by Sonya Cassidy.

While the scene showcases Reacher’s incredible physicality and quick thinking, it is the very sequence that Ritchson wished the show had taken some creative liberties with. Apparently, it was a very difficult scene to shoot (which is usually the case with filming in water). In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he stated:
“It was tough. That water work was pretty tricky, and stripping down and crawling across those cold, wet rocks naked was not the funnest for me and for just about anybody watching — but we did it because we love the show.
“Having read the book and [enjoyed] it, that was the one [part] that I was like, ‘I hope we skip over that. Maybe [Reacher] just crawls across the lawn, maybe he stays on the grass. But no, we actually built most of that world in a gigantic indoor pool. We had a wave-maker. I had some guys visit that have been on $400 million sets, like Aquaman, and sets that are just huge water world sets, and they’re like, ‘I’ve never seen anything like this for a water stunt.’ So yeah, it was crazy.”
‘Reacher’ Season 3 Already Has a Near-Perfect RT Score
Reacher’s first season was met with widespread critical acclaim, and it boasts a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus particularly states that “fans of the novels will find plenty to love about this faithful adaptation.” The second season surpasses the first and earns a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, winning praise for Ritchson’s dynamic hero and the way he would “rock ’em sock ’em pulp with a sly wink.” Season 3, currently dropping new episodes on Prime Video every week, has bounced further ahead with a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes rating of 97% so far.
The show’s commitment to staying true to Child’s books has been a huge factor in its success. Season 3, based on the novel Persuader, sees Reacher diving headfirst into a massive criminal enterprise and also trying to rescue an undercover DEA informant at the same time. The introduction of the book’s secondary antagonist, Paulie, as a formidable opponent, with Olivier Ritchers playing the character, adds a new layer of intrigue and excitement. The action sequences are more intense than ever and the characters are both complex and nuanced.
Looking ahead, Season 3 of Reacher still has five more episodes coming up. With its growing popularity, Ritchson’s spectacular, muscle-bound hero, and its ability to balance thrilling action with solid character development, the future of the series appears bright. It has also generated $279 million in subscriber revenue for Prime Video so far, as per a report from Parrot Analytics, so it is likely that the streamer will greenlight new seasons moving forward.
