Samuel L. Jackson Explains Why He Still Loves Playing the MCU’s Nick Fury

As one of the longest serving actors in the MCU, Samuel L. Jackson says he is still satisfied by his role.

Marvel

As one of the longest serving true members of the MCU, Samuel L. Jackson will continue his run as Nick Fury in the upcoming Secret Invasion Disney+ series, as well as being rumored to appear in Captain Marvel movie The Marvels early next year. Having first appeared in the post credit scene of Iron Man to recruit Tony Stark to his “Avengers Initiative”, Jackson has gone on to appear frequently throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe, sometimes in central roles and others, like in Avengers: Endgame, as a small cameo role that just reminds everyone that he is still very much part of that world.

Now Jackson is finally getting a headlining role as Fury in the Secret Invasion TV series, which is expected to arrive sometime at the end of this year or early in 2023. With his character still seemingly having a big role to play in the evolving narrative of the MCU, Jackson recently spoke to Collider about why he still enjoys playing Nick Fury. He said:

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Yeah. I love Nick Fury. Of course. Come on. He’s a guy who has no superpowers, who’s in charge of people who have superpowers, and they let him be,” Jackson told the site. “That’s something special about him. He’s a leader of men that are very different, in another kind of way. It’s very satisfying to be a part of a world that I admired for so long when I was a kid. I still buy comic books. I still go to comic book stores. I still read them. But to be able to be that character in that, it’s the same as when I was doing Afro Samurai, or any of those comic book characters. It means something to be part of a cultural canon that people revere and that they respect, in another way.”

Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury is a Lynchpin in the MCU

Marvel

Having been responsible for bringing together the Avengers, fought alongside Captain Marvel and aided in the prevention of the end of the world, Nick Fury is the one person who has been at the forefront of every Marvel battle even if he has been pulling the strings from a distance. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, it looked like Fury was constantly by Peter Parker’s side until at the last moment the movie flipped that to show that Fury was actually off-world and the character seen during the movie was a Skrull in his place.

This post-credit scene, which saw the return of the Skrulls from Captain Marvel, served to set up the Secret Invasion storyline which will now play out on Disney+. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury and will appear alongside Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull Talos, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Don Cheadle as War Machine, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, and MCU newcomer Emilia Clarke. The series has been filming recently and although it was originally rumored to join this year’s line-up of Marvel offerings on Disney+, following other shows like She-Hulk appearing to be shuffled back a little from their rumored release dates, it seems likely we will not see the series now arrive until early next year.
