Sarah Paulson Wishes She Skipped American Horror Story: Roanoke

Right now, it almost seems unthinkable to have an American Horror Story season without the involvement of Sarah Paulson, as she has played a role in all but the 9th season, but there is one season that the actress wishes she had skipped. Despite returning again and again to the series, Paulson revealed that she really didn’t connect with her character in season 6, Roanoke, and she regrets appearing in it at all.

American Horror Story season 6 story took on a two part format; the first half working as a mockumentary, while the second switched to a found footage format that looked at the making of the mockumentary and the terror that befell those working on it. While there was nothing wrong with Paulson’s performance in the season, she herself was very unhappy working on it.

Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Sarah Paulson said, “I just [didn’t] care about this season at all. I know people will get mad at me for saying it, but for me, this was post having played Marcia and it was what I went to do right after finishing Marcia.”

The “Marcia” referred to was her character of Marcia Clarke, in Ryan Murphy’s other series which came out around the same time, The People v O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story. Her work in that role seemed to take the shine off going straight into something like American Horror Story, but it was something she felt was required of her.

“I was so underwhelmed by the whole experience because I felt like I had entered into a new place inside of myself in terms of what I thought possible, in terms of what I might be willing to see if I can do,” the actor said. “I felt really kind of trapped by my responsibility and my contractual obligation to do American Horror Story. As much as it’s my home and I’ve loved it always, it was the first time I felt like I wish I could have gone to Ryan and said please let me sit this one out. You know, let me out.”

Sarah Paulson was given the option of ducking out of the following season, but said she was interested in the character so didn’t take up the offer. She also appeared in Season 8, but decided to take a break for Season 9, an 80’s slasher movie inspired season called “1984”. That said, Paulson is back for more in the upcoming Season 10: Double Feature, another series in two parts, with each half of the season telling a different story, hence the subtitle.

As well as the new season, Paulson is also expected to appear in Murphy’s spin off series, American Horror Stories, an anthology series of self-contained tales which premieres on FX on Hulu July 15, of which she directs one episode. The spin-off series will have 16 individual episodes, bringing in an expected “monster of the week” style focusing on many horror legends, lore and myths. For those who just can’t get enough of the franchise, this is a good year to be an American Horror Story fan. This comes to us from comicbook.
