Shadow and Bone Season 2 Renewed at Netflix, Cast Shares Their Excitement

With Netflix cancelling so many shows after just one season, there is always a risk attached to getting into something new on the streaming platform. Fans of hit fantasy Shadow and Bone are therefore rejoicing as it was announced the series has been given the go ahead for a second season. Since the series premiered earlier in the year, Netflix has been keeping tight lipped about whether there would be a return to Ravka anytime soon or indeed at all, and with many popular shows being given the axe recently the decision could have certainly gone a different way.

The new season reveal was announced during Netflix’s Geeked Week, and rather than just the usual three line statement, fans were treated to a video from the cast delivering the news in person. The video was posted on the Netflix Geeked account and very quickly racked up thousands of retweets and delighted comments from fans.

While season one of the series didn’t leave a devastating cliffhanger, it did provide the threads for new plots to be explored in a second series, and while the announcement was only made today about the future of the fantasy drama, the creator of the franchise already had plans in place should the green light be given.

Speaking to the CBR earlier in the year, in relation to more seasons, author Leigh Bardugo said, “I mean, we have plans! It’s not up to us whether we get to execute them, but we have many plans and many books that have plenty of road on them. But as my readers have learned, I love a good cliffhanger. I want you to be satisfied at the end of the story but desperate for more, so I think Eric [Heisserer] pulled that off quite well.”

Well it seems that Bardugo and executive producer Heisserer will now get the chance to make good on those plans and continue on for at least one more season because the guessing game begins again. In the meantime, fans on Twitter spent no time in sharing their thoughts on more Shadow and Bone, and it is fair to say that they were all just a little bit excited.

Shadow and Bone stars Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Freddy Carter, Amita Suman, Kit Young, Danielle Galligan, Calahan Skogman, Zoë Wanamaker, Kevin Eldon and Gabrielle Brooks to name but a few of the huge cast. The story follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a cartographer who discovers that she has the ability to summon light. The revelation of her power causes a rift across the world of Ravka. Under mentorship, Alina becomes seen as the only hope to break an impenetrable darkness that has split Ravka in two for hundreds of year. As if her life was not tricky enough, a gang of thieves known as the Crows make plans to kidnap her and make their fortune.

The first season of Shadow and Bone is available now on Netflix, and while it is too early to know when season two will premiere, we would expect it to drop sometime in Spring/Summer 2022.
