She-Hulk Director Kat Coiro Says Show Set in a ‘More Comedic World’

Jennifer Walters can survive anything. Fueled by her quiet rage and her passion for justice, the young attorney is determined to move forward – because who isn’t after law school, but one can probably imagine this feeling is a million times worse for a Hulk – and take on superhuman legal cases at a New York City law firm. But the series also promises an undercurrent of something a little different from the often more serious Hulk-fare: a half-hour legal comedy scripted in the style of Law & Order procedural. Recently, series director and executive producer Kat Coiro once again confirmed in an interview with The Wrap that the upcoming She-Hulk series on Disney+ will feature a comedic sensibility.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“I never choose a project based on genre,” Coiro said to The Wrap. “And I actually don’t’ think very much about genre, I think about character. I think about the emotional lives of the characters and, you know, can I bring something? Can I bring a mix of humor and heart to this? Because that is what I love to watch.”

Coiro went on to explain that the approach she took for She-Hulk is the same as the approach she utilizes for all of her projects: she “really focused on the characters and performance and finding the humor, but also grounding it in reality.” Coiro compared the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a playground and explained that “the cool thing about Marvel is just that it is an ever-evolving universe, and you have straight drams, and you have very comedic films.”

Coiro confirmed that She-Hulk will definitely be “playing with a more comedic world, but it also is still part of Marvel land.” Given that one of the writers on the show is Cody Ziglar, whose resume includes both Marvel Comics (including Amazing Spider-Man and the upcoming Spider-Punk) as well as TV shows like Rick & Morty and Craig of the Creek, this comedic sensibility makes perfect sense.

She-Hulk is scheduled to be released for streaming on Disney+ at some point in 2022 (although no specific date has been announced). In addition to starring Tatiana Maslany as Jennifer Walters, the show will feature the return of Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, whose blood gives his cousin Walters her superpowers after an emergency transfusion. The show will also introduce Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Golsberry, and Jameela Jamil, and will feature the return of Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky, better known as Abomination.

While little is currently known about the series, it has been suggested that the Disney+ She-Hulk series will lean into the character’s metafiction side. Furthermore, there have been rumors that Megan Thee Stallion could be appearing in the series as herself, laying credence to the rumors that the show will be breaking the fourth wall.

Coiro’s Marry Me Arrives on February 11th

Universal

Coiro made the comments during a press day for Marry Me, her upcoming movie, which will open in theaters and be released for streaming on Peacock on February 11th, 2022. Coincidentally, she isn’t the only MCU-adjacent professional to work on Marry Me: the movie stars Owen Wilson, who went on to film his role as Mobius M. Mobius in Loki’s first season directly after completing work on Marry Me, as Coiro went on to work on She-Hulk.

“It’s so fun to know that we were playing in the same universe again, and that’s the coolest thing about Marvel is that it’s this ever expanding universe,” said Coiro. “So although we didn’t interact, I feel like we’ve continued to be in each other’s orbits, which I love.”

Marry Me will arrive in theaters and for streaming on Peacock on February 11th, and She-Hulk will arrive for streaming on Disney+ later in 2022.
