Squid Game Creator Reveals Talks With Netflix About a Third Season

Squid Game was one of Netflix’s biggest hits of 2021, and it looks like talks of Season 3 have already begun.

We all know that when a series or movie is a hit these days, there’s a mad scramble to squeeze as much out of it as possible before the excitement dries up and withers away. When Squid Game became Netflix’s surprise hit of the year, it was inevitable they would soon be hounding creator Hwang Dong-hyuk to write a second season of the show about a group of down-on-their-luck people who find themselves in a deadly game with the promise of a huge cash prize. However, it looks like the conversations will not stop there, as Hwang revealed that there have already been discussions about a third season with the streaming giant.

“I’m in talks with Netflix over season 2 as well as season 3,” Hwang told The Korea Times. “We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”

There has been plenty of talk about a second season of Squid Game being in discussion stages, and Hwang has been relatively on board with doing more but not until he is ready. With these latest comments, however, things may have significantly changed and Hwang is now prioritizing the new installments of Squid Game despite his initial cool response to the success of the series and the possibility of a follow up. Previously speaking to the Associated Press, Hwang said:

“So, there’s been so much pressure, so much demand, and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice. But, I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.”

We are obviously still some time away from seeing Squid Game going into production on a second season never mind a third, but in a virtual panel previously hosted by EW, Hwang seemed happy to discuss who would take the lead in a future installments. During that panel, the creator speculated:

“I’m not really in the right place to be discussing season 2 in an official setting, but if there were to be a season 2, in the first season that we saw Gi-hun is a character whose humanity is shown through or exposed in certain situations. In other words, his humanity is shown through a very passive manner. But I would think that in the second season, what he has learned from the games and his experience in the first season, they will all be put to use in a more active manner. And at the same time, as for the Front Man [Lee Byung-hun] who was also a past winner but became a Front Man, it’s like Darth Vader. Some end up Jedi and some become Darth Vader, right? I think that maybe Gi-hun will go through a certain critical point where he is put through a test as well.”

Fans will have a little time yet to theorize on where the next two seasons will take the show, but there is no doubt that when Season 2 arrives, whenever that may be, it will once again become the one of the biggest series that Netflix has to offer.
