Steve Carell Looks Back on ‘Very Emotional’ Office Series Finale

As reported by PEOPLE, star Steve Carell recently reflected on exiting NBC’s popular series The Office. In an exclusive clip from Wednesday’s new episode of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast, the Foxcatcher star stated that shooting the show’s finale was “very emotional” for the actor. On the Office, Carell played Dunder Mifflin branch manager Michael Scott.

While chatting with his former costars, Carell said, “It was time for other characters to step to the forefront and other storylines to be pursued. I think it was the right…. The timing was right, I think for everybody but simultaneously there’s just a sense of joy for me that we had experienced all of this and we were getting… I was getting a chance to take a lap with everybody.”

The 40-Year-Old Virgin star continued, “And the way those last two episodes were structured, it felt very rich to me to simultaneously be saying goodbye as Michael and us as friends in this moment of work together. But, yeah, it was a lot, it was a very emotional thing.”

Angela Kinsey Said, “We Would Laugh One Minute and Then Be Tearing up the Next”

Fischer, who played Pam Beesly in the series, agreed with Carell’s statement, while Kinsey, who played Angela Martin, said, “It was just hitting us in waves I remember. We would laugh one minute and then be tearing up the next. But like you said, it was because we’d had such a good run, we’d had such a good time.”

“Incredible,” said Carell. “Just incredible.”

Aftering running for nine seasons, the final two episodes of the series, titled “Finale,” saw the Dunder Mifflin employees reunite to discuss the documentary and attend Dwight Schrute (played by Rainn Wilson) and Angela’s wedding. Carell’s character (who exited the Office after eight seasons) also made an unexpected return for the wedding.

Previously, John Krasinski (who played Office prankster Jim Halpert) spoke with PEOPLE about keeping quiet about Carell’s surprise return for the series finale.

He said, “It was so thrilling. We all just flat-out lied. I lied to Letterman! I have to apologize to him for that at some point. It was just one of those things that we all vowed and had to protect. Look what happened — it was the best. The ‘that’s what she said’ [throwback] was the perfect use of Steve.”

The Office is currently streaming on Peacock, while the comedy podcast Office Ladies releases new episodes every Wednesday on major podcast platforms.
